Tao Te Ching

Eighty-one short chapters on the Way that will not stay fully named, the virtue that does not contend for credit, and rule so light people say they did it themselves. Rendered for the Liberty Narrative Version — literal layer first, then the LNV reading, so the frame stays visible.

How this is made

Each chapter is worked from the received Wang Bi line of the Dao De Jing. Where Mawangdui or another witness changes the sense in a way that matters, that is noted on the chapter itself.

Three layers, kept separate: a literal-leaning English; short term notes where a character carries the weight; an LNV commentary that is labeled as interpretation, not smuggled in as “what Laozi really said.”

Classical Chinese here is short on purpose. Disagreement between translations is normal. This page states its criteria: a fixed base text, consistent key terms, and an explicit sovereignty-aligned reading.

Chapter 1 — The Way that can be fully way-ed

The way that can be fully “way-ed” (spelled out as a fixed way) is not the lasting Way.

The name that can be fully named is not the lasting name.

Without name: the beginning of heaven and earth. With name: the mother of the ten thousand things.

So: abide in the desireless, and watch the subtle. Abide in having desire, and watch the outward boundary (the named edge).

These two come from the same source and differ in name; both are called deep-dark (xuan). Darker still, and again darker — the gate of the many subtleties.

LNV reading

Any path that authority can fully script and enforce is already a managed path, not the living order it claims to own.

Any name a system can lock down — identity, compliance status, “safe,” “allowed” — is a handle for control, not the thing itself.

The unnamed side is where beginnings sit, before offices and passports of meaning. The named side is where things become administrable: mother of the managed world.

Stay free of grasping and you see the subtle play; stay inside desire for labels and you only see the fence line. Both grow from one root; the danger is mistaking the fence for the whole.

Depth under depth: the opening where real alternatives still appear.

What can be fully standardized is already not the living Way — only its paperwork.

7 term notes
道 dào Path / way / how things run — not only “doctrine” or a written program.
常 cháng Lasting, constant — not “ordinary” in this chapter.
名 míng Name, label, fixed designation — the power to define and file.
欲 yù Directed wanting; also the stance of grasping after handles.
妙 miào The subtle; the fine grain inside the named surface.
徼 jiào Border, outline, what you can point at and police.
玄 xuán Dark / deep — not available to bright labeling.

Chapter 2 — When all under heaven know beauty

When all under heaven know beauty as beauty, ugliness is already there. When all know good as good, the not-good is already there.

So: being and non-being give birth to each other; hard and easy complete each other; long and short shape each other; high and low lean on each other; tone and voice harmonize each other; front and back follow each other.

Therefore the sage stays with affairs of non-forcing (wu wei), and practices teaching without talk. The ten thousand things arise and he does not turn them away; he gives life and does not possess; he acts and does not rely on it; the work is completed and he does not dwell in it.

Only because he does not dwell in it, it does not leave.

LNV reading

The moment a system publishes an official definition of “beautiful” or “good,” it has also created the file for everyone who fails that test. Naming the approved form invents the residual class.

Opposites are not a moral drama first — they are how a world of labels works. High needs low; the compliant list needs the noncompliant list. Front and back only exist once a line is drawn.

The sage’s move is not to win the naming contest. It is to act without forcing the world into his program, and to teach without issuing a louder slogan. Things arise; he does not gatekeep their arising. He works; he does not own the output as identity. When the work is done, he does not move into the credit.

Refuse the seat of credit and the result is harder to confiscate. What you do not occupy as status is harder for an external authority to reassign or revoke.

Official “good” always invents its opposite — and credit claimed is credit that can be taken.

7 term notes
Beauty / ugliness (or “the bad”) — paired as soon as one side is fixed as the standard.
Good / not-good — same structure: the approved name produces its remainder.
有无 Being / non-being (or presence / absence) — mutual, not a one-way creation myth here.
无为 wú wéi Non-forcing, non-meddling action — not “do nothing,” but do not coerce the pattern.
不言 Without speech — teaching that is not a propaganda campaign.
Does not dwell / reside in the achievement — no permanent claim on the fruit.
不去 Does not depart — the result stays; the ego-lease does not.

Chapter 3 — Not elevating the worthy

Do not elevate the “worthy,” and the people will not contend. Do not prize goods hard to obtain, and the people will not become thieves. Do not display what can be desired, and the people’s hearts will not be disturbed.

Therefore the sage’s ordering of things: empty their hearts, fill their bellies, weaken their ambitions, strengthen their bones.

Always cause the people to be without contrived knowledge and without grasping desire. Cause those who “know” not to dare to act (in that contrived way). Act through non-forcing — and nothing is left unordered.

LNV reading

Status ladders train competition. Scarcity theater trains theft and hustle. Constant display of the prize trains a restless public. Much of what passes for “policy” is the deliberate staging of those three.

The counter-move is not a new cult of experts. It is reducing the artificial fuel: less official ranking of the worthy, less worship of rare goods as identity, less flashing of bait in every channel.

“Empty the heart, fill the belly” is plain: fewer managed cravings, enough real provision. Soften the will-to-dominate; keep the body able. That is the opposite of a population kept anxious, credentialed, and hungry for the next approved desire.

Those who live by clever schemes should find no open market for forcing everyone else into their plan. Govern by not forcing — and the need for endless intervention shrinks.

Stop manufacturing status, scarcity, and spectacle — contention starves.

7 term notes
Elevate / exalt the worthy — official prestige for a ranked elite.
争 Contend, compete for place — the race the ranking system creates.
Goods hard to get — rarity as value, scarcity as policy.
What can be desired — the displayed object of craving.
Empty the heart (of scheming craving) / fill the belly (real sufficiency).
Without contrived “knowing” and grasping desire — not praise of stupidity, but of not living by managed appetite and expert theater.
Do the non-forcing — order through minimal coercion.

Chapter 4 — The Way is empty yet used

The Way is empty (like a vessel), yet use it and it is somehow never filled. Deep — it seems the ancestor of the ten thousand things.

Blunt the sharpness, untie the tangles, soften the glare, join the dust.

Deep and still — it seems as if it might be there. I do not know whose child it is; it images what is before the Lord (of the high powers).

LNV reading

What is usable without being used up is not a stockpile and not a brand. A full warehouse can be seized, rationed, or counterfeited. An empty capacity that still works cannot be inventoried the same way.

Blunt the edge, loosen the knot, dim the spotlight, stand in ordinary dust: that is the opposite of building a sharp faction, a tangled bureaucracy, a blinding cult of personality, and a sealed elite above the ground.

The Way does not need a founder-myth that ends in an office. Even the high title “Lord” sits downstream of something that does not report to it. Sovereignty that must claim a parent in power is already smaller than what it pretends to own.

What never fills as property cannot be fully captured as property.

7 term notes
冲 chōng Empty / void like a vessel — capacity, not a hoard.
Not filled to the brim — use does not exhaust it into a countable store.
Blunt the sharp edge — reduce weaponized certainty and faction points.
Untie the tangles — loosen manufactured complication.
Harmonize / soften the glare — less blinding display of power or purity.
Share the dust — ordinary level, not a sealed class above the world.
Seems prior to the Lord (Di) — before the high named authority, not a subordinate department of it.

Chapter 5 — Heaven and earth are not humane

Heaven and earth are not humane (ren); they treat the ten thousand things as straw dogs. The sage is not humane; he treats the hundred families as straw dogs.

Between heaven and earth — is it not like a bellows? Empty, yet not collapsed; set in motion, and more comes out.

Many words lead often to exhaustion; better to hold the center.

LNV reading

“Not humane” here is not a celebration of cruelty. It is a refusal of sentimental favoritism dressed up as cosmic policy. Nature does not run a patronage list. The sage who orders a people the same way does not pretend the universe owes anyone a branded kindness.

Straw dogs were ceremonial forms — used, then discarded. The point is function without permanent privilege: nothing gets a forever exemption from the pattern because it is sacred to a faction.

The bellows image is capacity again: empty, workable, productive when moved — not a warehouse of slogans. Talk multiplies and runs out of force. Holding the center beats managing the world by constant speech.

Less patronage theater, more empty capacity — talk is a poor substitute for the center.

7 term notes
不仁 bù rén Not “humane” in the Confucian sense of graded humaneness — impartial, not cruel for sport.
刍狗 chú gǒu Straw dogs — ritual stand-ins, treated as sacred in use, not kept as permanent idols.
The hundred families / ordinary people — the populace as a whole.
橐龠 tuó yuè Bellows — empty vessel that yields more when worked.
Empty yet not exhausted / not bent in on itself — capacity holds.
Much speech often exhausts — wordiness fails.
守中 Hold the center (or the mean / the inward) — fewer words, stable core.

Chapter 6 — The spirit of the valley does not die

The valley spirit does not die; this is called the dark female (xuan pin). The gate of the dark female is called the root of heaven and earth. Continuous, as if it were there — use it, and it is not labored (not forced).

LNV reading

What endures is not the hard peak but the low place that receives. Valley, not fortress; root, not billboard.

“Dark female” is generative capacity that does not advertise itself — the gate things come through, not a throne that demands names and titles first. Heaven and earth are described as growing from that root, not from a loud command.

It seems barely there, yet it works without being driven hard. That is the same family of claim as empty capacity that never fills as property: real provision without frantic management. Force less; the root does not need your overtime.

The lasting source is low, generative, and unforced — not the peak that demands credit.

6 term notes
谷神 gǔ shén Valley spirit — the low, receptive place as living power; not a ghost in a ditch.
玄牝 xuán pìn Dark / deep female — generative principle; “female” as capacity to bear, not a cult slogan.
门 mén Gate — where things pass into manifestation.
Root of heaven and earth — source-language, not a bureaucratic founder.
Continuous, as if existing — subtle persistence, not spectacle.
Use it without toil / without forced exertion — works without being driven hard.

Chapter 7 — Heaven is long, earth is lasting

Heaven is long; earth is lasting. The reason heaven and earth can be long and lasting is that they do not live for themselves — therefore they can live long.

So the sage puts his own person behind, and his person comes first; sets his own person outside, and his person remains.

Is it not because he has no private self-interest? Therefore he can complete what is his.

LNV reading

What lasts is not what clings hardest to its own survival as a brand. Heaven and earth endure by not organizing the cosmos as a personal project.

The sage’s paradox: step back from self-display and the person is not erased — it is less exposed to the fights that destroy the self-seeking. Put the private claim outside the center, and what is real in you is harder to confiscate.

“No private self-interest” is not suicide of the self. It is refusal to make the whole field revolve around a claim. Paradoxically, that is how something of one’s own is actually completed — not as a title seized, but as a life that is not constantly spent defending a pedestal.

What does not live only for itself lasts; the self that will not be the center is harder to destroy.

7 term notes
Long / lasting — duration, not “famous.”
Do not live for themselves — not self-centered as a project.
Put their person behind — defer self-display.
身先 The person comes to the front — result of deferral, not of pushing.
Set the person outside — not occupying the center as private claim.
无私 Without private (selfish) regard — not “no self exists.”
Complete what is theirs — paradox: non-grasping fulfills what grasping ruins.

Chapter 8 — Highest good is like water

Highest good is like water. Water is good at benefiting the ten thousand things and does not contend; it stays in places the crowd dislikes — therefore it is close to the Way.

In dwelling, good is the (low) place; in the heart, good is depth; in giving, good is humaneness; in speech, good is trustworthiness; in governance, good is order; in affairs, good is ability; in movement, good is timing.

Only because it does not contend, it has no blame (no fault found against it).

LNV reading

Water does not win by climbing the ranking board. It takes the low ground people avoid, helps without sending an invoice for status, and so sits near the Way.

The list that follows is not a new law code. It is water’s pattern applied: live low, keep the mind deep, deal humanely, speak so your word holds, order without chaos theater, do what you can actually do, move when the time is live — not when the ego needs a spectacle.

Non-contention is not passivity. It is refusal to enter the race for blame and credit. What does not fight for the pedestal gives opponents less handle to condemn.

Take the low place, benefit without contending — near the Way, hard to prosecute.

7 term notes
上善 Highest good / best excellence — not “the Good” as a platonic brand name.
不争 Does not contend — no race for rank.
What the many dislike — low, wet, overlooked places.
Close to the Way — near, not identical as a slogan.
Good at ren (humaneness) — here one item in a practical list, not a Confucian takeover of the chapter.
Speech good at trust / fidelity — words that hold.
No blame / no fault attached — little handle for accusation.

Chapter 9 — Holding and filling is not as good as stopping

To hold and fill it full is not as good as stopping. To hammer it to a sharp point: it cannot be long kept.

Gold and jade fill the hall — no one can guard them. Wealth and rank with arrogance: you leave the disaster for yourself.

When the work is accomplished, withdraw yourself — that is the Way of heaven.

LNV reading

More stockpile, sharper edge, higher rank: the pattern looks like strength and behaves like a trap. What is filled to the brim spills. What is sharpened to a needle breaks or must be locked away. Treasure that fills the room invents the guard and the thief together.

Arrogance with wealth is not a side style — it is how you write your own summons.

Finish the task and step back. That is not false modesty as branding. It is alignment with how lasting order works: heaven does not move into the credit. Same line as chapter 2’s “does not dwell in the achievement,” and as the impulse not to keep adding law after the work of a life is already clear.

Stop before the brim; when the work is done, leave the pedestal empty.

8 term notes
Hold and fill to the full — overfilling what you grip.
Not as good as stopping — cessation as wisdom.
Pound / sharpen to a keen edge — brittle peak performance.
Gold and jade fill the hall — visible hoard.
Wealth and honor with arrogance.
Leave the blame/disaster for oneself — self-inflicted.
Work achieved, person withdraws — classic “step back when done.”
Way of heaven — the pattern of the larger order, not a church dogma.

Chapter 10 — Carrying the soul and embracing the One

Carrying the body-and-soul and embracing the One — can you be without separation? Concentrating the breath and bringing softness — can you be as a child? Cleaning and clearing the dark mirror — can you be without blemish? Loving the people and ordering the state — can you do so by non-forcing? When the gate of heaven opens and closes — can you take the female part? Bright understanding reaching the four directions — can you be without contrived knowledge?

Give life and rear them; give life and do not possess; act and do not rely on it; be elder and do not rule as master — this is called dark virtue (xuan de).

LNV reading

A string of tests, not a creed to recite. Can you hold together without splitting into a public mask and a private wreck? Soft without being weak? Clear perception without the stain of agenda? Care for people without turning care into a control program?

When power’s gate opens and closes, can you stay receptive rather than seize the male role of forcing? When you can see widely, can you refuse the arrogance of managed “knowing”?

Dark virtue is the same posture as before: bring forth, do not own; work, do not build a throne on the work; guide, do not dominate. That is mastery without the brand of master — recognizable across traditions, without one having to copy the other.

Hold unity, stay soft, clear the mirror, order without forcing — virtue that does not seize.

9 term notes
Embrace the One — undivided hold; not a sect password.
Focus the vital breath, reach softness — body-mind, not slogan.
Infant / child — soft, unforced, not childish theater.
Dark mirror / deep mirror — perception cleaned of stain.
无为 Non-forcing — again the hinge of ordering without coercion.
Take the female role — receptive, not the forcing “male” seizure of the gate.
无知 Without contrived knowledge — not celebration of ignorance.
Dark / deep virtue — effective power that does not display itself as ownership.
Be chief / elder and do not govern as butcher-master — lead without owning people.

Chapter 11 — The usefulness of what is not

Thirty spokes share one hub; it is at the empty place that the cart’s use is. Knead clay to make a vessel; it is at the empty place that the vessel’s use is. Cut doors and windows to make a room; it is at the empty places that the room’s use is.

So: what is present is for benefit (advantage); what is absent is for use.

LNV reading

We fixate on the spokes, the clay walls, the solid timber — the countable stuff. The chapter points at the hollow: the hub’s void, the bowl’s cavity, the door’s opening. Without that emptiness, the “something” does not work.

Managed life over-invests in what can be owned, displayed, and regulated. It under-values open capacity — space not filled by statute, identity not stuffed with official names, attention not packed with noise.

Presence gives leverage; absence gives use. A full room with no opening is a sealed box. A life with no empty center is the same.

What is solid sells; what is empty is what makes it work.

6 term notes
毂 gǔ Hub of the wheel — the hollow center the spokes meet.
At its nothing / empty place — where the void is.
用 There is the use of … — function depends on the empty.
利 lì Benefit, advantage — what “having” provides.
用 yòng Use, function — what the empty makes possible.
Having it / lacking it (the solid vs the void) — paired, not a war on matter.

Chapter 12 — The five colors blind the eye

Chinese (base line)
五色令人目盲;五音令人耳聋;五味令人口爽;

The five colors make a person’s eyes blind; the five tones make a person’s ears deaf; the five flavors make a person’s mouth dull (fail).

Racing and hunting make the heart go wild; goods hard to obtain make a person’s conduct harmful.

Therefore the sage works for the belly, not for the eye — so he discards that and takes this.

LNV reading

Overload the senses and judgment dies. Spectacle, noise, engineered taste, the chase, the rare prize — a program for agitation. The heart goes feral; behavior turns toward what blocks a straight life.

“For the belly, not for the eye” is not anti-beauty. It is priority: real sufficiency over display, substance over the feed. Drop the bait-train; keep what actually sustains.

Same pressure as chapter 3’s warning about displaying the desirable and prizing the rare — now at the level of the body and the nervous system.

Starve the spectacle; feed what sustains — belly over eye.

8 term notes
Five colors / tones / flavors — the full, formal set; excess of patterned stimulus.
Mouth injured / palate ruined — taste blunted by excess.
Galloping and hunting — the chase as lifestyle.
Heart/mind goes mad — agitation, not clinical diagnosis.
Goods hard to get — again scarcity as hook (see ch. 3).
Conduct obstructed / made harmful — behavior thrown off.
For the belly, not for the eye — sufficiency vs display.
Leave that, take this — deliberate selection against the bait.

Chapter 13 — Favor and disgrace are like warnings

Favor and disgrace are like (causes for) startle; value great calamity as you do the body.

What is meant by favor and disgrace being like startle? Favor is lower (unstable): getting it startles; losing it startles — that is favor and disgrace like startle.

What is meant by valuing great calamity as the body? The reason I have great calamity is that I have a (private) body-self; if I had no such body-self, what calamity would I have?

Therefore: one who values the world as he values his own person — to him the world may be entrusted. One who loves the world as he loves his own person — to him the world may be given into care.

LNV reading

Official favor is a leash. Win it and you jump; lose it and you jump. A life organized around approval is permanently startled.

“Calamity because I have a body-self” is not hatred of flesh. It is the exposed, claim-making self — the one that can be ranked, favored, disgraced, and threatened. Shrink that pedestal and the blackmail surface shrinks with it.

Who can be trusted with the wider field? Not the one who treats the people as a ladder for private favor, but the one who holds the common world with the same care as their own life — without needing the crowd’s favor as oxygen.

Favor is a startle-leash; less pedestal, less blackmail — only then is the wider field safe to entrust.

7 term notes
Favor and disgrace — official or social approval and its withdrawal.
Like being startled — both gain and loss jolt the nervous system.
Favor is “below” / unstable / demeaning as a basis — readings vary; sense is favor is not a secure high ground.
身 shēn Body / person / self-as-exposed — the vulnerable claim-self, not only anatomy.
大患 Great calamity / trouble — the cost of that exposure.
无身 Without such person-self — without the pedestal-self, not “annihilate existence.”
Entrust / deposit the world — who is fit to be given care of the wider realm.

Chapter 14 — Looked for, it is not seen

Looked for and not seen — call it yi (the level/elusive). Listened for and not heard — call it xi (the rare/faint). Reached for and not held — call it wei (the subtle/small).

These three cannot be pushed to a final interrogation — so they blend and become one.

Above, it is not bright; below, it is not dark. Continuous, it cannot be named — it returns again to no-thing.

This is called the shape without shape, the image of no-thing — called huang hu (dim, elusive).

Meet it: you do not see its head. Follow it: you do not see its rear.

Hold the Way of the old, to ride and order what exists today. To be able to know the ancient beginning — this is called the thread of the Way.

LNV reading

What matters most here will not sit still for a full audit. Not visible as a logo, not audible as a slogan, not graspable as inventory — yet not nothing. The three fail separately; together they are one field.

Not a spotlight above, not a murky fraud below. It runs continuous, sheds the name, and returns toward the unnamed. Shape without shape: the opposite of a product you can photograph and license.

You do not capture its front or its tail as a timeline of ownership. What you can do is hold the old pattern of the Way well enough to steer present “what is” without inventing a new tyranny of names. Knowing the ancient beginning is not nostalgia — it is keeping the thread so today’s apparatus does not pretend to be the source.

What you cannot see, hear, or hold as stock still orders the present — if you keep the thread, not only the labels.

8 term notes
Traditional triad for the unseen, unheard, ungraspable aspects of Dao — exact English glosses vary.
Cannot be driven to final questioning — not fully available to interrogation.
Blended as one — unity, not three separate gods of the gaps.
无物 No-thing / not a discrete object — returns toward the unnamed, not “nihilism” as mood.
Elusive, dimly present — hard to fix in a bright concept.
Hold the ancient Way — continuity of pattern.
Drive / steer today’s existents — order the present without inventing a false source.
Thread / discipline / record of the Way — the linking line, not a bureaucracy.

Chapter 15 — The old masters of the Way

Of old, those good at living as masters (of the Way) were subtle, minute, darkly penetrating — too deep to be known.

Only because they cannot be known, one forces a description: Cautious, as if fording a stream in winter; Wary, as if afraid of neighbors on all four sides; Reserved, as if a guest; Yielding, as if ice about to melt; Simple and honest, as if uncarved wood; Open, as if a valley; Mixed, as if muddy water.

Who can take the muddy and, by stillness, slowly make it clear? Who can take the at-rest and, by movement, slowly bring it to life?

Those who keep this Way do not desire to be full. Only because they are not full, they can be worn and yet newly made.

LNV reading

Real mastery does not read as a bright résumé. It is hard to file, so the text offers images instead of a credential list: careful crossing, wary of surveillance on all sides, guest not landlord, melting not frozen hard, uncarved not over-finished, valley not peak, muddy not fake-pure.

Mud settles by stillness; life returns by gentle motion. That is process, not a purge bureaucracy. Forcing instant clarity or instant activation is the opposite of this tempo.

Do not aim to be filled to the brim with status or certainty. What is not full can be scuffed by the world and still renew. What is stuffed with itself only cracks.

Deep mastery won’t file cleanly — stay unfilled, and the worn can become new.

8 term notes
Those good as shi — skilled practitioners of the Way; “master” in a practical sense.
Subtle, minute, darkly through — penetration without display.
For want of better, force a likeness — approximate description only.
朴 pǔ Uncarved wood — simplicity before over-working.
谷 Valley — low open capacity (echo of ch. 6).
Muddy / clear — clarity by settling, not by violent extraction.
Do not desire fullness — refuse the brim (echo of ch. 9).
Be covered/worn and yet newly accomplished — renewal without stuffing the self.

Chapter 16 — Attain extreme emptiness

Attain extreme emptiness; hold stillness fast.

The ten thousand things arise together; I watch them return. Things are teeming, each returns again to its root.

Returning to the root is called stillness; that is called returning to destiny (ming). Returning to destiny is called the constant; knowing the constant is called brightness (clarity).

Not knowing the constant: reckless action — misfortune.

Knowing the constant, one can tolerate (embrace). Tolerating, one can be impartial. Impartial, one can be kingly (fit for the realm). Kingly, one can be of heaven. Of heaven, one can be of the Way. Of the Way, one lasts long. To the end of the body — without danger.

LNV reading

Empty out the noise-floor; keep stillness solid. From there you watch the cycle: things rise, and they return to root — not as a slogan, as a pattern you can observe.

Root → stillness → return to assigned life-course → the constant → clarity. Miss the constant and you improvise against the grain; that is how disaster is self-made.

Clarity widens into room for others; room becomes fairness; fairness becomes fit to hold a realm; that aligns with heaven, with the Way, with duration. This is not a career ladder of titles — it is a sequence from inner emptiness to public order that does not rely on frantic interference.

“Return to root” here is cousin to the voice in Mary: set nature back into its own root — without needing the same cosmology on both sides of the map.

Empty, still, watch them return to root — know the constant, or reckless action breeds its own ruin.

10 term notes
Push emptiness to the extreme — clear the inner clutter.
Guard stillness earnestly — stable quiet, not numbness.
观复 Watch the return — observe the cycle back.
Return to their root — same family of “root” language you’ve been tracking.
复命 Return to ming — life-mandate / given course; not “fate” as superstition only.
常 cháng The constant — lasting pattern (echo of ch. 1).
明 míng Brightness / clarity — insight, not PR.
Reckless doing brings ill — action against the constant.
容 / 公 / 王 Embrace → impartial → kingly — widening of capacity; 王 is fit for rule, not “kingdom of God” imported.
Through the body’s end, not in peril — duration without chronic crisis.

Chapter 17 — The highest is barely known

The highest under heaven: those below only know that he exists. Next: they love and praise him. Next: they fear him. Next: they insult him.

When trust is insufficient, there is distrust. Quiet — he values his words.

Work completed, affairs finished — the hundred families all say: We did it of ourselves (ziran).

LNV reading

Best order is almost invisible. People barely register a manager. Next best is affection and praise — already a personality cult. Then fear. Then contempt, when force and fraud have burned the credit down.

Thin trust breeds non-trust. The remedy is not louder propaganda; it is few words and real completion of the work.

When something actually works, the public’s natural sentence is: we did this ourselves. That is not a lie the sage plants. It is what success looks like when nobody stole the center. Credit-seeking rule trains dependence; light rule leaves capacity in the people.

Same ridge as “Son of Man within,” kingdom not “Look, here or there,” and masters who do not need the brand — without forcing Luke or Laozi into one book.

Best rule is barely known; when the work is done, people say they did it themselves.

7 term notes
太上 The highest (ruler / order) — top of the ladder of governance styles.
Those below know only that he exists — minimal awareness, not a fan club.
Love and praise — second tier; still personal glorification.
Fear / insult — coercion, then collapse of legitimacy.
Trust insufficient — credibility deficit.
Values words (uses them sparingly) — speech is costly.
We of ourselves / it happened naturally” — ziran as spontaneous, not “I am Nature” as slogan.

Chapter 18 — When the great Way is discarded

Chinese (base line)
大道废,有仁义;智慧出,有大伪;

When the great Way is abandoned, there is (talk of) humaneness and righteousness. When clever-knowing appears, there is great falsity. When the six relations are not in harmony, there is (talk of) filial piety and parental kindness. When the state and house are dark and in chaos, there are loyal ministers.

LNV reading

Virtue-branding spikes after the living pattern has already slipped. Official humaneness, clever policy, family slogans, loyal-minister theater — often symptoms, not proofs of health.

When the Way holds, you do not need a campaign about being good. When kinship works, you do not need a cult of filial posters. When the realm is in order, you do not need a pantheon of loyalists to advertise that someone is still honest.

Same structure as distrusting extra statutes after the bound is already set: the louder the moral product, the more you should ask what collapsed underneath.

When the Way is gone, the slogans of virtue arrive — as compensation, not as evidence.

7 term notes
The great Way abandoned / in ruins — living pattern dropped.
Humaneness and righteousness — Confucian virtue-names; here as after-the-fact branding.
智慧 Clever knowing / smarts — contrived intelligence, not deep clarity (明).
Great artifice / hypocrisy — manufactured virtue and policy.
Six relations — core kinship web.
Filial piety and kindness — family virtues named when the family is already split.
Loyal ministers — celebrated most when the house is already dark.

Chapter 19 — Cut off sageliness, discard cleverness

Chinese (base line)
绝圣弃智,民利百倍;绝仁弃义,民复孝慈;

Cut off sageliness and discard cleverness — the people benefit a hundredfold. Cut off humaneness and discard righteousness — the people return to filial piety and kindness. Cut off craftiness and discard profit — thieves and robbers cease to be.

These three, taken as ornament, are not enough; therefore let there be something they belong to: See the unbleached silk, embrace the uncarved wood; lessen private claim, reduce desire.

LNV reading

This is not a war on skill or kindness. It is a war on **virtue as costume**. Official sage-brand, clever-policy brand, humaneness-and-righteousness brand, clever-profit brand — when those become the product, the people get poorer in fact, families stay split, and theft finds a market.

Drop the ornament and the natural bonds have room to return. Drop the hustle-craft and the thief’s economy loses fuel.

The positive turn is small and concrete: unbleached, uncarved, less private grabbing, fewer manufactured wants. Same pressure as “no extra statute after the bound” — strip the add-on program so the living pattern can operate.

Drop virtue-as-advertising; return to plain cloth, uncarved wood, less grabbing.

6 term notes
Cut off “sage” display and discard clever-knowing — anti-credential theater, not anti-wisdom.
Cut off branded ren/yi — so actual kinship can return (echo of ch. 18).
Cut off cunning craft and profit-hunt — the hustle that breeds theft.
As ornament / pattern, not sufficient — slogans alone don’t hold.
See the undyed silk, embrace uncarved wood — plain substance.
Lessen private claim, reduce desire — less grabbing, fewer hooks.

Chapter 20 — Cut off learning, and there is no more grief

Cut off (contrived) learning — and there is no (that) sorrow. “Yes” and “yeah” — how far apart are they? Good and evil — how far apart are they? What others fear, one cannot but fear. The waste stretches on — it has no end!

The crowd is festive, as if at the great sacrifice, as if climbing a terrace in spring. I alone am still, with no sign yet showing — like an infant that has not yet learned to laugh; worn, as if with no place to go home.

The crowd all have surplus; I alone seem left behind. I have the heart of a fool! Muddy, muddled.

Worldly people are bright-bright; I alone am dim-dim. Worldly people are sharp-sharp; I alone am dull-dull.

Calm — as the sea; blown — as if without halt. The crowd all have their uses; I alone am stubborn and rustic. I alone am different from others — and I value feeding at the Mother.

LNV reading

“Cut off learning” is not a hymn to stupidity. It is cutting the curriculum of status-knowledge that produces anxiety and faction — the same “cleverness” 18–19 already distrusted.

The crowd’s feast and spring terrace are official joy and surplus display. The one who holds the Way looks poor, late, unimpressive, even foolish by that scoreboard. Brightness and sharpness here are the glare of the managed world, not clarity of root.

Difference is not brand eccentricity. It is valuing the Mother — the source, the low generative root (echo of ch. 6) — over the surplus, the party, and the résumé of being useful to the current order.

If a culture only rewards festive surplus and sharp compliance, the one who returns to the uncarved will look like a leftover. That is expected, not a failure of the Way.

Drop the school of anxiety; look foolish next to the feast — feed at the source, not at the surplus.

9 term notes
Cut off learning — the contrived curriculum, not all knowing (cf. 弃智).
Formal yes vs casual yes — how thin the official distinction.
Good vs evil — how far apart, really, once both are branded.
Great sacrificial feast — public plenty and rite.
No omen yet / no display yet — not advertising a rise.
Infant not yet at the laughing-child stage — prior to social performance.
Worldly bright vs seeming dim — glare vs unflashy.
Sharp discrimination vs seeming muffled — audit-mind vs quiet.
食母 Feed at the Mother — source, valley-root; not a church slogan forced in.

Chapter 21 — The bearing of great virtue

The bearing of great virtue follows only the Way.

As a thing, the Way is only elusive, only dim. Dim, elusive — within it there is image. Elusive, dim — within it there is something.

Deep, dark — within it there is essence. Its essence is very true; within it there is trust (xin).

From of old to now, its name has not departed — by this one views the beginning of the many. How do I know the shape of the beginnings of the many? By this.

LNV reading

Great virtue has no separate costume. It takes its shape from the Way, not from a platform or a brand of goodness (the opposite of chapter 18’s late-arriving

The Way still refuses inventory: dim, elusive — yet not a vacuum. Image, something, essence, trustworthiness are inside the dimness. You do not need a sharp official name to have a real core.

The name that does not depart is not a trademark office. It is continuity of pattern from the beginnings. You know how things start by staying with this — not by joining the surplus feast or writing another statute when the system is already hollow.

Virtue follows the Way into the dim — real essence, no need for a bright counterfeit name.

8 term notes
Great / vast virtue — de as effective power of character, not a church office.
Follows only Dao — virtue has no separate program.
Elusive, dim (echo of ch. 14) — present but not photographable.
Image / something — form-hint and presence inside the dim.
精 jīng Essence / concentrated reality — inner potency.
信 xìn Trust, reliability — the core holds; not “faith” as church membership.
Its name does not leave — continuity, not a filed trademark.
The many beginnings / progenitors of things — origins of the manifold.

Chapter 22 — Bend and you will be whole

Bend and you will be whole; warp and you will be straight; hollow and you will be filled; worn and you will be new; have little and you will gain; have much and you will be confused.

Therefore the sage embraces the One and becomes a pattern for all under heaven.

He does not display himself, so he is bright. He does not insist he is right, so he is manifest. He does not boast, so he has merit. He does not brag, so he lasts.

Only because he does not contend, no one under heaven can contend with him.

What the ancients called “bend and be whole” — how could that be empty talk? Truly whole, and they return to it.

LNV reading

Wholeness here is not winning the straight-line contest. Yield, take the low, accept being worn, keep little — that is how something stays usable. Pile on much (office, brand, surplus law) and confusion follows.

Embrace the One as a pattern, not as a campaign to occupy every seat. No self-display, no self-righteousness, no self-advertised merit, no self-exaltation — brightness and duration come as side-effect, not as the prize chased.

Non-contention is strategic as well as ethical: the one who will not enter the fight for the center gives the rigged contest nothing to lock onto. That is closer to withdrawing energy than to running the maze until it loves you.

The old saying is not decoration. Become whole that way, and you return to it — root, not résumé.

Bend, stay low, don’t contend — the rigged fight can’t find a handle on you.

7 term notes
Bent, then complete — yield as the path to wholeness.
Little, then gain; much, then bewilderment.
Embrace the One — undivided hold (echo of ch. 10).
Pattern / model for all under heaven — example, not occupier of every office.
Not self-displaying, not self-justifying, not self-praising, not self-exalting.
不争 Does not contend — again the hinge.
Truly whole, and return to it — authenticity of the old formula.

Chapter 23 — Sparse speech is natural

Sparse speech is natural (ziran).

So a whirlwind does not last the morning; a sudden rain does not last the day. Who makes these? Heaven and earth. Even heaven and earth cannot make them last — how much less can humans?

Therefore: those who work at the Way become the same as the Way; those who work at virtue become the same as virtue; those who work at loss become the same as loss.

One with the Way — the Way is glad to have them. One with virtue — virtue is glad to have them. One with loss — loss is glad to have them.

When trust is insufficient, there is distrust.

LNV reading

Few words, like weather that isn’t forced. Storms are loud and short. Even heaven and earth don’t sustain a tantrum all day. Human shouting-campaigns last even less as living order — they only last as noise.

You become what you practice. Walk the Way, and you sit with the Way; walk manufactured virtue-branding, and you sit with that brand; walk loss (the collapsing pattern), and loss keeps you. This is less magic than affinity: systems receive their own kind.

Thin trust, again, breeds no-trust (echo of ch. 17). More speech will not fix a credibility hole. Sparse, real alignment will.

Storms don’t last; you keep company with what you practice — thin trust cannot be shouted whole.

6 term notes
希言 Rare / sparse speech — few words (echo of 贵言).
自然 So-of-itself — unforced; not “nature” as scenery only.
Whirlwind / sudden rain — violent weather, brief.
Engage in / work at the Way — practice, not mere slogan.
Become the same as Way / virtue / loss — affinity with what you inhabit.
Same couplet as ch. 17 — credibility deficit produces disbelief.

Chapter 24 — Who tiptoes does not stand

Who stands on tiptoe does not (truly) stand. Who strides too wide does not (truly) walk. Who displays himself is not bright. Who takes himself as right is not manifest. Who boasts has no merit. Who brags does not last.

As for these, in terms of the Way, they are called leftover food and extra flesh (a tumor of conduct). Things seem to hate them — therefore those who have the Way do not dwell there.

LNV reading

Over-effort looks like standing and is only tiptoe. Over-stride looks like progress and is only a lunge. Self-display, self-righteousness, self-praise, self-exaltation — the same four already refused in chapter 22 — fail as brightness, presence, merit, duration.

The Way names that extra push leftover and grotesque: food past need, growth past form. Even “things” (the wider field) reject it. So those who hold the Way don’t live in that stance.

Wu wei as alignment: stop adding the lunge that throws the walk off. The system you were describing rewards tiptoe and wide stride; this chapter says those are exactly the postures that cannot stand or last.

Tiptoe and over-stride fail; self-display is leftover food — those on the Way won’t live there.

6 term notes
企者 One who stands on tiptoe — strained height.
One who stretches the stride too far — forced haste.
Self-display / self-rightness / boasting / arrogance — same cluster as ch. 22.
Leftover food and superfluous growth — excess that disgusts.
Things perhaps detest it — the field itself turns from that stance.
Those who have the Way do not dwell in it — refuse that posture as home.

Chapter 25 — There is something formed in chaos

There is something mixedly formed, born before heaven and earth. Silent, sparse — standing alone and unchanging, cycling and not in danger — it can be the mother of all under heaven.

I do not know its name. I style it Dao; forced to give it a name, I call it Great.

Great means passing on; passing on means going far; going far means returning.

So: the Way is great, heaven is great, earth is great, the king is also great. In the realm there are four greats, and the king sits as one of them.

Humans take earth as law; earth takes heaven as law; heaven takes the Way as law; the Way takes what-is-so-of-itself (ziran) as law.

LNV reading

Before the split into sky and ground, a mixed whole — quiet, not lonely as a personality, cycling without panic. “Mother of all under heaven” is source-language, not a throne in a capital.

Even the author will not pretend to have the real name. Dao is a courtesy title; “Great” is a forced label. What is great moves on, goes far, and comes back — not a stockpile that sits in one office.

The “four greats” put the ruler in the field with Way, heaven, and earth — not above them. Then the chain of law: people copy earth, earth heaven, heaven the Way, the Way ziran. Last word is not a king’s statute. The highest pattern does not imitate a bureau; the bureau, if it is sane, imitates the unforced.

Wu wei sits here as that last step: effortless because it follows so-of-itself, not because it worships a person.

Nameless source, forced name “Way”; even the ruler is only one of four — the Way follows what is so of itself.

7 term notes
混成 Formed in mixture / as an undivided whole — prior to neat split.
Born before heaven and earth — prior, not a late invention of state.
I style it Dao — a courtesy name, admitted as makeshift.
Forced to name it — echo of “forced description” in ch. 15.
Pass on / go far / return — motion and homecoming, not linear empire.
The king is also great — one of four, not the source; we keep “king/ruler,” not “kingdom.”
The Way takes ziran as its pattern — so-of-itself, unforced; hinge of wu wei.

Chapter 26 — The heavy is the root of the light

The heavy is the root of the light; stillness is the lord of restlessness.

Therefore the noble one travels all day and does not leave the supply wagons. Though there are glorious sights, he rests at ease, detached.

How can the lord of ten thousand chariots take his own person lightly as regards all under heaven?

Light, and you lose the root; restless, and you lose the lord.

LNV reading

Lightness without weight is drift. Motion without stillness is agitation wearing a crown. The one who can walk all day still stays near what grounds him — the “heavy wagons,” not the parade float.

Glory is available; he does not move house into it. That is inner rest under the option of spectacle — the same fork as chapter 12 (belly, not eye) and chapter 20 (not the spring terrace).

A ruler who treats his person as a lightweight stunt toward the whole field has already lost the plot. Take the self as a toy of display and you lose the root; stay restless and you lose the inner sovereign that should govern impulse.

Walking the Way (or “in those shoes”) is hardest when the wagons are empty — no stillness, no root, only light and noise.

Stay near the heavy; let stillness rule agitation — light and restless lose both root and lord.

8 term notes
Heavy / light — grounded vs flighty, not moral “serious vs fun.”
Stillness / restlessness — quiet vs agitation.
Baggage / supply wagons — what keeps a march fed and grounded.
Glorious spectacle / honored view — the show.
Dwell at ease, beyond it — rest that is not captured by the view.
Lord of ten thousand chariots — a great ruler, kept as political fact, not “kingdom” mysticism.
Take his person lightly toward the realm — frivolous self as policy.
Lose the root / lose the lord — foundation gone, inner rule gone.

Chapter 27 — Good walking leaves no track

Chinese (base line)
善行无辙迹,善言无瑕谪,善数不用筹策;

Good walking leaves no rut-track. Good speech leaves no flaw to blame. Good counting uses no tallies. Good shutting uses no bolt-and-bar, yet cannot be opened. Good tying uses no cord-and-knot, yet cannot be undone.

Therefore the sage is always good at saving people — so there is no discarded person; always good at saving things — so there is no discarded thing. This is called cloaking the light (inheriting clarity).

So the good person is the teacher of the not-good; the not-good person is the resource of the good.

Not to value the teacher, not to love the resource — though clever, great confusion. This is called the essential subtlety.

LNV reading

Skill that needs a deep groove, a prosecutable sentence, an abacus, a lock, a rope — is still forcing the world to hold your shape. The better work doesn’t cut a rut others must police.

No discarded people, no discarded things: the opposite of a purity regime that throws away whoever fails the brand. Clarity worn as a cloak, not as a spotlight (echo of 和其光).

The not-good are not trash; they are how the good still have work and measure. Refuse both teacher and raw material and cleverness becomes a bigger maze.

Wu wei here is competence without leftover machinery — and mercy without a discard pile.

Leave no track and no discard pile — lock without a bolt; don’t throw people away.

8 term notes
No wheel-ruts — passage that doesn’t scar a mandatory path.
No flaw to censure — speech that doesn’t invite the prosecutor.
Counting rods / schemes — external calculation theater.
Gate-bar — hardware lock.
Cloaked brightness / inherited clarity — light worn, not brandished.
No abandoned persons / things — against the discard regime.
资 zī Resource / raw material — the not-good as what the good still work with.
The essential subtlety — hinge-point of the art.

Chapter 28 — Know the male, keep the female

Know the male, keep to the female — become a stream for all under heaven. Become that stream, and constant virtue does not leave; you return to the infant.

Know the white, keep to the black — become a pattern for all under heaven. Become that pattern, and constant virtue does not err; you return to the unlimited (wuji).

Know the glory, keep to the disgrace — become a valley for all under heaven. Become that valley, and constant virtue is sufficient; you return to the uncarved block.

The uncarved block, scattered, becomes vessels. The sage uses it and becomes chief of offices. Therefore the great cutting (great ordering) does not slice.

LNV reading

Know the forceful pole; inhabit the receptive one. Stream, pattern, valley — low conduits, not peaks. Infant, unlimited, uncarved: three names for return, not three new credentials.

Glory is known; you keep to the low name. That is not self-harm. It is where constant virtue stays full.

When the uncarved is split into tools and offices, something is lost even if the tools work. The sage can use office without turning the whole into endless slicing — great ordering that does not keep cutting the block into thinner laws and thinner people.

Wu wei sits in “keep to,” not in “perform the male until you win.” What comes natural here is return to pu, not another campaign of carving.

Know the hard pole, stay with the low one — return to infant, unlimited, uncarved; great order does not keep slicing.

7 term notes
Know the male, keep the female — know force, inhabit receptivity (echo of 为雌).
Stream / valley for all under heaven — low watercourse, not throne.
Return to the infant — unforced softness (echo of ch. 10).
无极 Without limit / ultimate — prior to carved poles.
朴 pǔ Uncarved block — again the classic return-point.
Pu scattered becomes vessels/tools — differentiation as loss of whole.
Great tailoring / great order does not cut — administration that doesn’t keep fragmenting.

Chapter 29 — Those who take all under heaven and act on it

Those who mean to take all under heaven and work it — I see they do not get it.

All under heaven is a sacred vessel; it cannot be worked (forced), cannot be held. Who works it ruins it; who holds it loses it.

So among things: some walk, some follow; some breathe gently, some blow hard; some are strong, some weak; some are loaded, some collapse.

Therefore the sage discards the extreme, discards the lavish, discards the excessive.

LNV reading

The world is not a machine you seize and operate. Treat it as a project of will and you don’t obtain it — you break it. Grip it as possession and it slips.

Things already differ: lead and follow, soft breath and hard gust, strength and thinness, bearing load and falling in. Forcing one tempo onto that field is the opposite of wu wei.

The sage’s cut is subtractive: drop the extreme, the luxury display, the too-much. Not a new exertion. Taking the system to “fix it by doing” is the same error as trying at not-trying.

The field is a sacred vessel — force it and you ruin it; hold it and you lose it. Drop excess.

6 term notes
Take all under heaven and do/work it — seize-and-operate.
Do not obtain it / cannot succeed — the grab fails.
神器 Sacred / spirit vessel — not ordinary inventory; handle wrongly and it breaks.
Cannot be forced-as-project / cannot be gripped as stock.
Who acts-on it wrecks it; who clings loses it.
Remove the extreme, the lavish, the excessive — subtraction, not a new campaign.

Chapter 30 — Do not strengthen the world by arms

Those who assist a ruler by the Way do not strengthen all under heaven by weapons. Such affairs are apt to rebound.

Where troops camp, thorns grow. After a great army, there is sure to be a barren year.

The good stop at a result — they do not dare take it as a means to force.

Result, and do not brag; result, and do not boast; result, and do not be arrogant; result, as what could not be helped; result, and do not force.

When things peak in vigor they age. That is called not-the-Way. Not-the-Way ends early.

LNV reading

Advice to those near power: don’t “fix the world” by militarizing it. Force rebounds. Ground that hosts armies grows thorns; after the host comes scarcity. That is pattern, not a sermon.

Stop when the needed result is there. Don’t convert the result into a platform for strength, pride, or the next campaign. “Could not be helped” is the only honest tone left if force was used at all.

What is pumped to a peak ages fast. That is not-the-Way, and not-the-Way doesn’t last. Same as tiptoe and over-stride: the strong-arm program dies early.

天下 here is the wider world-field — not a mystical Kingdom slipped in to echo the gospels.

Don’t make the world strong by arms — it rebounds; stop at the result; what is forced to peak dies early.

8 term notes
Do not use weapons to make all under heaven strong — 天下 = the world-field, not “kingdom.”
The affair likes to return — rebound, blowback.
Thorns grow there — land ruined where armies sit.
A bad / famine year — scarcity after mobilization.
The good have the fruit and stop — result without converting it into domination.
Not already to be helped / last resort — only then, if at all.
Things at peak vigor then age — forced prime decays.
What is not-the-Way ends betimes — short life of the forced peak.

Chapter 31 — Fine weapons are unlucky tools

Fine weapons are unlucky implements. Things seem to hate them; therefore those who have the Way do not dwell with them.

The noble one, in ordinary dwelling, honors the left; when using arms, honors the right.

Weapons are unlucky implements, not the noble one’s implements. Use them only when it cannot be helped; calm-and-plain is best. Victory is not to be treated as beautiful. Who treats it as beautiful delights in killing people.

Who delights in killing people cannot get their will upon all under heaven.

Auspicious affairs honor the left; inauspicious honor the right. The lieutenant general stands left; the senior general stands right — this means they are handled with funeral rites.

When the slain are many, mourn them with grief. When the battle is won, handle it with funeral rites.

LNV reading

Arms may be finely made; they are still ill-omened tools. The Way does not make a home in them. If they must be used, it is last-resort, dry, without celebration.

To beautify victory is to enjoy killing. That stance cannot have its way in the world-field — not because of a hidden Kingdom-title, but because the field will not be lastingly held by someone who loves the corpse-count.

Win, and treat it as a funeral. Mass death is not a festival. That is the opposite of turning force into identity and parade.

天下 again: the wider world, not a mystical kingdom-word slipped in.

Weapons are unlucky tools; if used at all, no beauty in winning — a funeral, not a feast.

9 term notes
Fine / excellent weapons — quality of make, not moral beauty.
Inauspicious implements — ill-omened tools.
Those with the Way do not dwell there — same formula as leftover food in ch. 24.
Honor left / right — ritual polarity; left auspicious in civil life, right for war/death in this scheme.
Use only when it cannot be helped — echo of ch. 30.
Calm and plain is highest — no relish.
Delight in killing people — the disqualifier.
Get one’s will in all under heaven — succeed upon the world-field; not “inherit the Kingdom.”
Handle it with mourning rite — victory staged as funeral.

Chapter 32 — The Way is forever nameless

The Way is constantly without name. The uncarved block, though small — nothing under heaven can make it a subject.

If lords and kings can keep to it, the ten thousand things will guest themselves (come of themselves).

Heaven and earth combine and drop sweet dew; the people, with no one commanding them, even themselves out.

When cutting-and-ordering begins, there are names. Once names are there, one should also know when to stop. Know when to stop — and you can be without danger.

How the Way is in all under heaven is like streams and valleys toward the rivers and the sea.

LNV reading

The Way stays unnamed. The small uncarved thing cannot be conscripted as anyone’s servant. Hold that, and things arrange as guests — not as a conquered list.

Dew falls; people even out with no edict. That is the field already doing what banners claim only a program can do.

Names start when we begin to cut and administer. The danger is not that names exist; it is not knowing when to stop naming. Stop in time and you don’t live in chronic peril.

The Way in the world is water finding the sea — already spread through the low places. People stare at offices and miss the movement. Same shape as a kingdom already on the earth, unseen — without swapping in that English word for 天下.

Nameless block none can enslave; once names start, know when to stop — the Way in the world runs downhill like water to the sea.

8 term notes
Dao is constantly unnamed — echo of ch. 1.
Pu though small — the uncarved, slight thing.
None can make it a minister/subject — cannot be conscripted.
Guest themselves — come of their own accord.
No one orders them, yet they even themselves — unforced evening-out.
When instituting/cutting begins, names appear.
知止 Know stopping — the bound; don’t keep adding names (same pressure as not adding statutes).
The Way’s being in all under heaven — Way in the world-field; streams-to-sea simile.

Chapter 33 — Who knows others is clever

Who knows others is clever; who knows himself is bright. Who beats others has force; who beats himself is strong.

Who knows sufficiency is rich. Who forces his walk has will (ambition).

Who does not lose his place lasts long. Who dies and yet does not perish is long-lived.

LNV reading

Cleverness that inventories other people is cheaper than clarity that knows the self. Force that defeats a rival is cheaper than strength that masters the startled, favor-seeking self (ch. 13).

Sufficiency is wealth; the lunge of “strong walking” is only willpower theater — tiptoe again.

Keep your place (root, center) and you endure. “Die and not perish” is not a body-trick. It is the same hinge as inner sovereignty: what can be killed on the surface is not the whole of what you are. In LNV terms that is Kingdom-within language — the essence not plugged into the fear network — without translating 明 or 强 as “kingdom.”

Know yourself, master yourself, know enough — last by not losing your place; what dies on the surface need not be the whole of you.

6 term notes
智 / 明 Clever vs bright — 智 here is sharp social knowing; 明 is inner clarity. Some English flattens both to “wise.”
Has force vs is strong — beating others ≠ self-mastery. “Strong” in popular versions sometimes blurs the pair.
知足 Know enough / know sufficiency — wealth as stopping, not pile.
强行 Force the walk — effortful striving; not wu wei.
Does not lose his place — station/root, not a job title only.
Dies yet does not vanish — persistence of what is not the seized surface-self. Not a license to invent “immortal soul” vocabulary the line doesn’t use.

Chapter 34 — The great Way floods everywhere

The great Way floods — it can go left or right. The ten thousand things rely on it to live, and it does not refuse them. Work completed, it does not name itself as owning.

It clothes and rears the ten thousand things and does not act as master. Always without desire, it can be named small. The ten thousand things return to it and it does not act as master — it can be named great.

Because it never makes itself great, it can complete its greatness.

LNV reading

The Way is already spread through the field — left and right, not a checkpoint “here or there.” Things live by it; it doesn’t refuse them or invoice them as subjects.

Done work, no title of owner. Nourish, don’t master. That is inner Kingdom and civic liberty in one motion: provision without a throne, return without conscription.

Call it small because it doesn’t grab; call it great because everything comes home to it and still isn’t owned. Self-enlargement would ruin the greatness — same as office-seeking that thinks it must occupy the hall to matter.

Agorist rhyme: the order that feeds without becoming lord. Spiritual rhyme: the field already present, unseen as a brand.

The Way floods the field, feeds, and will not be master — great because it never claims to be.

7 term notes
The great Way overflows / spreads — already through the field.
May go left or right — not a single official gate.
Does not refuse — no membership screening as source.
Work done, does not name-own it — echo of 功成弗居.
Does not act as lord/master — twice; hinge for liberty reading.
Can be named small / named great — names after the fact, not a grab for greatness.
Does not make itself great — non-self-enlargement completes greatness (echo of ch. 7).

Chapter 35 — Hold the great image

Hold the great image, and all under heaven come. They come and are not harmed — peace, evenness, vast calm.

Music and bait (cakes): passing guests stop.

The Way, brought out at the mouth, is bland — as if without flavor. Look: not enough to see. Listen: not enough to hear. Use it: not enough to exhaust.

LNV reading

Hold the great pattern and the field comes toward you — not because you advertised a feast. Arrival without harm: peace that is even, not a checkpoint peace.

Music and cakes stop the passer-by. That is spectacle and bait (ch. 3, 12). The Way in speech is almost flavorless. You can’t point at it like a sign (“Look, here”). You can use it without using it up.

Kingdom already spread: people halt for the show and miss the bland thing that actually feeds. Inner sovereignty doesn’t need the guest-stopping banquet. Liberty rhyme: bait-state vs inexhaustible use that won’t inventory.

Hold the great image — the field comes unharmed; bait stops guests, the Way is bland and cannot be used up.

7 term notes
大象 Great image / great pattern — the form-without-form of ch. 14, not a state emblem. Some versions say “Great Symbol” as if it were a logo.
All under heaven go toward it — world-field comes; not “the kingdom arrives” as a future parade. (If English uses “kingdom” here, it is their choice, not the Chinese noun.)
Peace, evenness, greatness/calm — rest without harm.
乐与饵 Music and bait/food — entertainment plus lure; 饵 is bait, not only “cakes.”
Passing guests stop — attention captured, not rooted.
Bland, as if tasteless — opposite of five flavors (ch. 12).
Use it and it is not exhausted — empty capacity again (ch. 4, 6, 11).

Chapter 36 — If you would shrink it, first stretch it

What you mean to shrink, you must first have stretched. What you mean to weaken, you must first have strengthened. What you mean to abolish, you must first have raised. What you mean to take, you must first have given.

This is called subtle brightness. Soft and weak overcome hard and strong.

Fish cannot leave the deep pool. A state’s sharp tools of advantage must not be shown to others.

LNV reading

Things turn at their peak. Stretch is how shrink begins; a raised thing is already set up to fall. Seeing that curve is 微明 — faint clarity, not a trick recipe for running a sting operation on the world.

Soft-weak over hard-strong is water again (ch. 8), not a cult of losing. Power that must always display its edge has already left the pool. The fish dies in the air; the state’s “sharp tools” die as spectacle — show them and you hand the handle to everyone, including those who will use them on you.

Liberty rhyme: a regime that lives by flashing its instruments trains the next grab. Inner rhyme: stay in the deep; don’t beach the self on display (ch. 24).

What is stretched is ready to shrink; soft overcomes hard — keep the sharp tools in the deep, not on display.

6 term notes
Close/contract vs open/stretch — reversal pair.
必固 Must already / must first — the prior phase of the cycle, not “you ought to manipulate.” Some popular readings turn this chapter into a manual of deceit; the grammar is closer to “the pattern already runs this way.”
微明 Subtle / faint brightness — seeing the small turn.
Soft-weak overcome hard-strong — water-pattern, not moral surrender.
Fish must not leave the abyss — leave the deep and you die of exposure.
The state’s instruments of advantage — 国 is the state, not 天下. Showing the arsenal is the error.

Chapter 37 — The Way does not force, yet nothing is left undone

The Way is constantly without forcing — yet nothing is not done.

If lords and kings can keep to it, the ten thousand things will transform of themselves.

Transforming, if desire arises, I will settle it with the nameless uncarved block.

The nameless uncarved block — they too will not desire. Without desire, and still — all under heaven will settle of itself.

LNV reading

Wu wei stated straight: no extra force, and the work still happens. Keep to that and things change without a management cult.

When change wakes new grasping, the counterweight is not a thicker statute book. It is nameless pu — the uncarved, which quiets desire by not feeding it. Stillness, and the field settles by itself.

Sovereignty-aligned: order that does not require a restless center of control; desire reduced so the world-field can self-stabilize. Not a claim that every scripture already said this chapter.

No forcing, yet nothing left undone — if desire stirs, settle it with nameless uncarved wood; the field goes still by itself.

6 term notes
Does not force, and there is nothing not done — classic wu wei couplet; not “do nothing and magically win.”
自化 Transform of themselves — self-change, not administered conversion.
Desire arises / starts to act — grasping after the transformation.
Settle/press it down with nameless pu — quiet the grab with the uncarved, not with more program.
Not-desiring, by stillness — rest as the mechanism.
All under heaven will stabilize of itself — world-field, self-settling. (English “kingdom will be established” would be their overlay.)

Chapter 38 — Higher virtue is not virtue-as-display

Higher virtue is not (displayed as) virtue — therefore it has virtue. Lower virtue does not let go of virtue — therefore it has no virtue.

Higher virtue does not force, and has nothing it does it for. Lower virtue does not force, yet has something it does it for.

Higher humaneness acts, and has nothing it acts for. Higher righteousness acts, and has something it acts for.

Higher ritual acts, and when no one answers, it rolls up the sleeves and drags them.

So: lose the Way, then virtue; lose virtue, then humaneness; lose humaneness, then righteousness; lose righteousness, then ritual.

Ritual is the thinning of loyalty and trust, and the beginning of disorder. Fore-knowledge (clever foresight) is the flower of the Way — and the beginning of foolishness.

Therefore the great person dwells in the thick, not in the thin; in the real, not in the flower. So discard that and take this.

LNV reading

Real virtue doesn’t wear a virtue-badge. What clings to the badge has already lost the thing. The decline is a ladder down: Way → branded virtue → humaneness campaign → righteousness campaign → ritual that, when you don’t clap, grabs your arm.

When trust is thin, ceremony gets loud. That is not civilization peaking; it is the start of disorder. Clever “foresight” is the Way’s flower arrangement — pretty, and the start of folly.

Stay in the thick and the real. Drop the thin and the floral. Historically: orders that live on ritualized compliance and expert prediction after the living pattern is gone don’t last. Uncarved / thick / real is the method; dragging sleeves is the tell that natural following has already failed.

Virtue that must keep its name has none; when ritual has to grab your arm, disorder has already begun.

8 term notes
Higher de is not “de” as worn display — having it by not advertising it.
Without an ulterior “in order to” vs with a purpose-agenda — motive-trace.
Bare the arm and drag them — ritual enforced when response fails.
The decay sequence — each named virtue arrives as the prior living layer drops.
The thinning of inner fidelity and trust — ritual as leftover rind.
Head/beginning of disorder — not the cure of disorder.
前识 Prior knowing / clever anticipation — flower, not root.
Same close as ch. 12 — leave the show, take the substance.

Chapter 39 — Those of old that got the One

Those of old who got the One: Heaven got the One and was clear; earth got the One and was at rest; spirits got the One and were numinous; valleys got the One and were full; the ten thousand things got the One and lived; lords and kings got the One and were the set-right of all under heaven.

Pushed to the end of it: Heaven without means to be clear would fear splitting; earth without means to be at rest would fear collapse; spirits without means to be numinous would fear dying out; valleys without means to be full would fear running dry; things without means to live would fear perishing; lords and kings without means to be noble-and-high would fear stumbling.

So: the noble takes the lowly as root; the high takes the below as foundation.

Therefore lords and kings call themselves orphaned, bereft, no-good grain. Is this not taking the lowly as root? Is it not?

So: pile up the praises and you have no praise. Do not want to gleam gleam like jade — be clattering-rough like stone.

LNV reading

Unity is what keeps each layer working. Lose the One and the high things crack, stall, dry, die, stumble — they don’t need you to knock them down first.

Height that forgets its low foundation is already on the way to a fall. Even the titles know it when they still call themselves poor names. Stack the honors and honor vanishes.

Prefer rough stone to display jade. Sovereignty-aligned: the center that must shine like a jewel has left the root. Let the unrooted high stumble; don’t become its next ornament — or its full-time opponent. It is already afraid of the slip.

Without the One the high splits and stumbles — take the low as root; be stone, not display jade.

7 term notes
得一 Got the One — undivided hold (echo of 抱一), not a sect password.
Set-right / linchpin of all under heaven — 贞 as correct-stabilizer; some older English stretches this toward “kingdom” language.
Would fear split… stumble — the high already contains its collapse.
The noble takes the cheap/low as root.
Orphan, bereft, unharvest — humble royal self-titles.
Many carriages/honors, no carriage/honor — praise piled into nothing. (Text variants exist; sense is surplus title empties title.)
Gleaming like jade vs rough-clacking like stone — display vs uncarved weight.

Chapter 40 — Return is the Way’s motion

Return is the Way’s movement; weakness is the Way’s use.

The ten thousand things under heaven are born from having (you); having is born from not-having (wu).

LNV reading

The Way moves by turning back — to root, to the low, to the uncarved — not by endless forward lunge. What it uses is the soft, not the peaked strong

Things appear from “there is”; “there is” appears from “there is not.” Empty capacity again (ch. 11): the usable hollow is prior, not a hole in a failed plan.

Sovereignty-aligned: systems that only know advance and hardness are already against the motion. They don’t need you to smash them as a career; return and softness outlast them. Those still with the undivided have no taste for the split that those systems require.

The Way moves by return and works by softness — what is comes from what is not.

5 term notes
反 fǎn Return / reversal — homeward motion, not “contradict” as debate-win.
The Way’s movement — how Dao acts in the field.
The weak/soft is the Way’s use — water-pattern; some English “weakness” sounds like failure, the sense is yielding efficacy.
Having / not-having — presence and the empty prior; not a slogan war on matter.
The ten thousand things under heaven — world-field’s manifold.

Chapter 41 — When the best student hears the Way

故建言有之:明道若昧;进道若退;夷道若颣;
上德若谷;广德若不足;建德若偷;质真若渝;

When the highest student hears the Way, he works at it and practices it. When the middle student hears the Way, it seems there, seems gone. When the lowest student hears the Way, he laughs loud at it. If it were not laughed at, it would not be sufficient to be the Way.

So established sayings have it: The bright Way seems dark; the advancing Way seems retreat; the level Way seems rough.

Highest virtue seems a valley; vast virtue seems insufficient; established virtue seems stealthy; the solid-true seems to shift.

Great square has no corners; great vessel is late in completing; great tone has little sound; great image has no shape; the Way is hidden, without name.

Only the Way is good at lending and at completing.

LNV reading

Laughter from the lowest ear is expected. A Way that pleased the surplus-feast on first hearing would be another product.

What is bright looks dim to the glare-trained eye; what advances looks like backing up; what is even looks rough. Valley, shortfall, stealth, wobble — the real thing does not photograph as a win.

Greatness without corners, late vessel, scarce sound, no shape, no name: you can’t file it, so the middle student loses it and the lowest mocks it. Still it lends and completes — feeds without owning (ch. 34).

Those who know the One in the other don’t need the mockers converted on schedule. Harming them would be self-harm; forcing them would be tiptoe. Practice, and let the laugh prove the thing isn’t a brand.

If no one laughed, it wouldn’t be the Way — bright looks dark; the Way hides unnamed and still completes.

8 term notes
High / mid / low student — grades of hearing, not a saved-caste system.
Unlaughed-at would not suffice as Dao — mockery as a sign of genuineness, not a goal.
Bright Way as if dark — glare vs root-light.
Highest de like a valley — low capacity (echo of 6, 15, 28).
Great vessel completes late — not instant credential. (Variant 大器免成 exists in some witnesses; received line is “late complete.”)
Great tone, scarce sound — echo of 希言 / 听之不闻.
Great image, no shape — echo of 14, 35.
Good at lending/advancing and completing — gives use, finishes, doesn’t confiscate.

Chapter 42 — The Way gives birth to One

The Way gives birth to One; One gives birth to Two; Two gives birth to Three; Three gives birth to the ten thousand things.

The ten thousand things carry yin at the back and embrace yang; blended breath becomes harmony.

What people hate — only “orphaned,” “bereft,” “no-good grain” — yet kings and dukes take them as titles.

So among things: some are diminished and thereby gain; some are increased and thereby lose.

What others teach, I also teach: The violent-strong do not get their (proper) death. I will take that as the father of teaching.

LNV reading

From the unnamed to the One to split to the many — difference without a mandate to hate the other pole. Yin at the back, yang in the hold, breath mixed as harmony: opposition inside one field, not a trained enemy.

The names people flinch from, the high still wear. Loss can be gain; extra can be loss (ch. 22, 36).

The lesson worth repeating: the violent-strong don’t get a completed death — they end wrong, early, unquiet. That is the teaching’s root, not a curriculum of who to despise. Hate is extra carving. The undivided doesn’t need it; a state that needs it is already advertising its fear.

From Way to the many by mixture, not by hate — the violent-strong do not finish well; that is the lesson to keep.

8 term notes
万物 Way → One → Two → Three → the many — unfolding, not a war origin-myth.
Carry yin, embrace yang — both held; not pick a side to exterminate.
冲气以为和 The empty/blending qi becomes harmony — 冲 as in ch. 4’s empty vessel.
Same humble titles as ch. 39 — what the crowd hates, the high still claim.
Diminish and gain / increase and lose — reversal.
The violent-strong / brute-beam people — force as character.
Do not get their death — don’t die a completed/natural end; short and wrong.
教父 Father of teaching — the root lesson, not “church father.”

Chapter 43 — The softest rides over the hardest

The utmost soft under heaven rides and gallops over the utmost hard under heaven.

What-is-not enters what-has-no-gap. By this I know the benefit of non-forcing.

Teaching without talk, the benefit of non-forcing — few under heaven reach it.

LNV reading

Water over rock again: the utmost soft runs across the utmost hard. Empty enters where a wedge won’t — no gap needed for what isn’t a lump.

That’s how you know wu wei pays. Not as a slogan. As physics of the field.

Wordless teaching and unforced benefit are rare because institutions run on talk, gap-forcing, and the hard tool. The biggest official crook institutionalizes the hard. The soft still outlasts it without matching its curriculum of hate.

Utmost soft rides the utmost hard; not-having enters the seamless — few reach wordless teaching and the gain of not forcing.

6 term notes
Utmost soft / utmost hard — water-and-rock pair.
Gallop / ride across — the soft moving through, not smashing as a peer.
Not-having enters no-interval — the empty goes where solid tools jam.
The usefulness of wu wei — benefit, not laziness.
Teaching without speech — echo of ch. 2.
Few under heaven attain it — rare, not a mass party plank.

Chapter 44 — Name or body — which is closer?

Name and body — which is dearer? Body and goods — which is more? Gaining and losing — which is the affliction?

Therefore: extreme love (of those) must mean great expense; much storing-up must mean thick loss.

Know sufficiency — and you are not disgraced. Know when to stop — and you are not in peril. Thus you can last long.

LNV reading

Rank-name vs the living person; person vs the pile; winning vs the wound of loss. The question is already the answer: what the feast scores is not what lasts.

Over-love costs; over-store bleeds. A world that trains people to survive only by grabbing will call the grab “the only way.” Sufficiency and stopping are how you step off that curriculum without waiting for the hall to repent.

No disgrace in enough; no chronic danger in knowing the bound (知止, ch. 32). Duration lives there — not in matching the biggest crook’s method.

Name and stock cost the person; know enough and know when to stop — then you last, without the disgrace-and-peril cycle.

7 term notes
Name/fame vs body-person — title vs the living self.
Person vs goods — life vs inventory.
Obtain vs lose/perish — which is the real sickness.
Extreme attachment must mean great outlay — love-of-the-prize spends you.
Much hoarding, thick loss — store breeds the loss-event.
Know sufficiency, no disgrace — echo of 33.’s
Know stopping, no peril — same 知止 as ch. 32.

Chapter 45 — Great completeness seems lacking

Great completion seems lacking — its use does not wear out. Great fullness seems empty — its use is not exhausted.

Great straightness seems bent; great skill seems clumsy; great eloquence seems stammering.

Restlessness overcomes cold; stillness overcomes heat. Clear-and-still is the set-right of all under heaven.

LNV reading

What is whole looks incomplete to the surplus-eye; what is full looks like a hollow. That’s why it doesn’t wear out (ch. 4, 11, 15). Straight looks bent; real skill looks clumsy; real speech looks slow. The feast wants gleam-jade and sharp talk.

Agitation can fight a chill; only stillness beats a fever. Clear quiet as the world’s set-right — not a thicker criminal code that turns sellers into outlaws and outlaws into gangs.

Sovereignty-aligned: the order that looks “not enough” to the manager is often the one that still works. Forced completeness (full statute, full enforcement theater) is the vessel that cracks.

Great completeness looks broken and still works; clear stillness sets the field right — not glare and fever.

7 term notes
Great completion as if defective — unfinished look, unspent use.
Great fullness as if empty — 冲 as in ch. 4.
Great straight as if bent — echo of 枉则直 (ch. 22).
Great craft as if clumsy — not hustle-craft (巧) of ch. 19.
Great distinction-in-speech as if slow-tongued — against 多言.
Stillness overcomes heat — rest as the stronger medicine.
Clear-still as the corrector/set-right of the world-field — 正 not “kingdom.”

Chapter 46 — When the world has the Way

When all under heaven has the Way, racing horses are sent back for dung (farm work). When all under heaven lacks the Way, war-horses are born on the frontiers.

No calamity is greater than not knowing sufficiency. No fault is greater than desiring to obtain.

Therefore: the sufficiency of knowing sufficiency — that is constant sufficiency.

LNV reading

When the field is aligned, force-stock goes back to manure and fields. When it isn’t, the border breeds war-horses. Violence becomes the normal animal.

The root named here is not “need a harsher statute.” It is 不知足 and 欲得 — not-enough as worldview, grabbing as identity. A ban-and-prison machine aimed at a product feeds both: black-market prize, and men with nothing left to lose.

Sufficiency that knows itself is the only sufficiency that lasts. Sovereignty-aligned: pull desire and extra war-law down, and the war-horse has less pasture. Pile on the extreme sentence, and you breed the crew already ready to die.

Way present: horses dung the fields. Way absent: war-horses at the border. The deep calamity is not-knowing-enough.

6 term notes
World-field has/has-not the Way — alignment vs misalignment of the whole.
Send racing horses back to fertilize — military stock returned to soil.
War-horses born in the suburbs/frontiers — militarization as ecology.
Not knowing sufficiency — the named root disaster.
Desire to obtain — grabbing as the named fault.
The enough of knowing-enough is the constant enough — echo of 33, 44.

Chapter 47 — Without going out the door

Without going out the door, know all under heaven. Without peering through the window, see the Way of heaven.

The farther one goes out, the less one knows.

Therefore the sage does not travel, yet knows; does not look, yet is bright; does not force, yet completes.

LNV reading

The pattern isn’t won by touring every office and battlefield. Door shut, the world-field is still readable; window shut, heaven’s Way is still visible. The farther the lunge, the thinner the knowing — survey as substitute for root.

Not-walking, not-staring, not-forcing, and it completes. That is wu wei as method, and it rhymes with not trying to occupy the rigged center: you don’t need to storm every room to know how the house falls, or to live the uncarved alternative.

Sovereignty-aligned: intelligence from stillness beats frantic circuit of the spectacle. Agorist rhyme: build and see from where you stand; don’t confuse motion with mastery.

Don’t leave the door — the farther the tour, the less the knowing; not-forcing still completes.

6 term notes
Not exiting the door, know the world-field — inward pattern-sense, not travel-ban as dogma.
天道 Way of heaven — heaven’s pattern, not a church title.
The more far the going-out, the more scant the knowing — distance as loss of signal.
Not traveling, yet knows — knowledge without the tour.
Not looking (in that way), yet bright — 明 as inner clarity.
Not forcing, yet complete — wu wei couplet again.

Chapter 48 — Pursue learning and you increase

Work at learning: daily increase. Work at the Way: daily decrease.

Decrease and decrease again, until you arrive at non-forcing. Non-forcing — and nothing is not done.

Taking all under heaven is always by being without (meddling) affairs. When there are (such) affairs, they are not sufficient to take all under heaven.

LNV reading

The curriculum of the feast adds daily — more statute, more credential, more handle. The Way subtracts daily — less desire, less display, less grab — down to wu wei, where the work still happens.

The world-field is not taken by a busy program. The busy program is exactly what cannot hold it (ch. 29). Agorist attitude as decrease: stop staffing the false center; let natural order be the “win,” not a seat you occupy.

If victory meant storming the hall, this chapter would contradict you. It doesn’t. It says the hall-taking mindset is already the thing that fails.

Learning adds; the Way subtracts down to not-forcing — the field is not taken by busyness.

7 term notes
为学日益 Doing study/learning, daily plus — accumulation of managed knowing (cf. 绝学).
Doing the Way, daily minus — subtraction as method.
Decrease and decrease again — not one gesture.
Until you reach wu wei — the landing, not a pose you strain at.
Same couplet as ch. 37.
Taking the world-field is always by no-meddling — 无事 as not stirring affairs, not “do nothing forever.”
Having those affairs is not enough to take the field — busyness disqualifies.

Chapter 49 — The sage has no set mind

The sage has no constant (private) mind; he takes the hundred families’ mind as mind.

The good, I treat as good; the not-good, I also treat as good — virtue as goodness. The trustworthy, I trust; the not-trustworthy, I also trust — virtue as trust.

The sage, in all under heaven, draws in and draws in — for the world-field he muddies (blends) his mind. The hundred families all fix their ears and eyes; the sage treats them all as children.

LNV reading

No private set-point to defend as brand. The people’s actual mind is the field, not a program you impose on them.

Good to the good and also to the not-good; trust toward the trusted and also toward the untrusted — not naivete as policy, but refusing the trained split that manufactures an enemy class (and then a gang class). Virtue here is the quality of that refusal.

Draw in, blend the mind, don’t glare. They stare and listen for a ruler-show; he meets them as children — uncarved, not a voter-resource or a threat-list.

Victory as outlasting: no credit needed, no seat needed. The one who won’t play the feast’s mind-game is hard to exhaust.

No private set mind — good even to the not-good; blend, don’t glare; meet them as children, not as a prize or an enemy.

7 term notes
No constant private mind — no fixed agenda-self; 常 here as “set/habitual,” not the 常 of ch. 1’s lasting Way.
Take the people’s heart-mind as mind — not “rule by poll,” but no private center imposed.
The not-good I also treat-as-good — refuse the discard pile (ch. 27).
De as goodness / de as trust — virtue constituting that stance.
Drawing inward — contracted, not broadcast.
Make the mind muddy/whole — blend, against 察察 sharpness (ch. 20).
Treat them all as children — infant-soft, not domination and not sentimentality as a campaign.

Chapter 50 — Coming out into life, entering into death

Coming out into life, entering into death. Companions of life: three in ten. Companions of death: three in ten. People, in living, who move toward death-ground: also three in ten.

Why? Because they take living too thick (over-nourish life).

I have heard: those good at holding life walk the land and do not meet rhinoceros or tiger; enter the army and are not touched by armor and weapons.

The rhinoceros has no place to plant its horn; the tiger no place to use its claw; weapons no place to take their blade.

Why? Because they have no death-ground.

LNV reading

A third live toward life, a third toward death, a third walk themselves onto death-ground by overdoing “life” — thickness of grab, display, fear-management. That thickness is ego-survival as project; it creates the surface a horn, claw, and blade can find.

Who holds life well isn’t magically bulletproof. They offer no death-ground: no pedestal-self to gore, no frantic prize to hunt, no war-horse identity. Outlasting without making a target of the All-for-me.

Victory for the All looks like less surface for violence to catch — not a personal legend of beating the tiger.

Over-thick living makes death-ground; hold life so there is nowhere for the horn, claw, or blade to land.

6 term notes
Exit into life, enter into death — the passage, not a slogan.
Ten-and-three — usually read “three in ten”; some read “thirteen.” Sense: a large share each way.
Move themselves onto death-ground — walk into the killing place.
Thickness of “living life” — over-nourishing, over-clinging to survival-as-project.
Good at taking-up / keeping life — holding life well.
No death-ground — no place on them where death gets a purchase.

Chapter 51 — The Way gives birth; virtue rears

The Way gives them birth; virtue rears them; things give them form; circumstance completes them.

Therefore among the ten thousand things none but honor the Way and value virtue.

The Way’s honor, virtue’s value — no one commands this, and it is constantly so-of-itself.

So the Way gives birth, virtue rears; grows them, raises them; completes them, ripens them; nourishes them, covers them.

Give birth and do not possess; act and do not rely; be elder and do not master — this is called dark virtue.

LNV reading

Birth, rearing, form, completion — a sequence no office issued. Honor of Way and worth of de happen without a mandate; they are ziran. That is natural law as the text means it: the pattern that does not need your trophy to run.

Dark virtue is care without ownership. Personal achievement that needs to master the thing it grew has already left the sequence.

Sovereignty-aligned: return things to that uncommanded honor. Beating a rival, taking a seat, signing the work — thinner than the All coming back to root.

Way births, virtue rears — honored without a command; grow and do not master. That dark virtue beats a personal win.

6 term notes
Dao begets, de raises — source and rearing-power.
Circumstances / propensity complete them — the field finishes what force-of-will claims.
No one orders it, constantly ziran — uncommanded so-of-itself.
Honor Dao, value de — recognition without a decree.
Same dark-virtue chain as ch. 10.
Dark / deep virtue — effective, unadvertised.

Chapter 52 — The world has a beginning

All under heaven has a beginning; take it as the mother of all under heaven.

Having gotten the mother, thereby know the children. Having known the children, return and keep to the mother — through the body’s end, no peril.

Block the openings, shut the gates — through life, not toiled. Open the openings, complete (push) the affairs — through life, not saved.

See the small: call it brightness. Keep to the soft: call it strength.

Use the light, return again to the brightness; do not leave calamity to the person — this is called practicing the constant.

LNV reading

Get the mother (source, root, unnamed), and the many “children” (things, offices, crises) are readable. Know them, then go back and keep the mother — duration without peril (没身不殆 again). That is outlasting, not a trophy.

Shut the stimulus-gates and life is not a grind. Fling them open and push every affair, and life is not salvageable. Eye-and-feast culture (ch. 12) is the open-gate path.

See the small; keep the soft. Use light, return to inner brightness — don’t bequeath wreckage to the person. Practice the constant, not the news-cycle of children without mother.

Sovereignty-aligned: return to source beats administering every child-crisis. The uncarved method is still gathering; this chapter is its door-and-mother form.

Get the mother, know the children, keep the mother — shut the gates and life is not a toil; see the small, keep the soft.

8 term notes
Mother of all under heaven — source of the world-field (echo of ch. 1, 25).
子 Children — the derived many; things as offspring of the mother.
Return and keep the mother — 反 as practice.
Stop the holes, close the gates — senses/exits of leak; not “never speak.”
Not toiled vs not saved — ease vs unsalvageable busyness (勤 as in ch. 6 用之不勤).
Seeing the small is called ming — faint clarity (微明), not glare.
Keeping softness is called strength — echo of 自胜者强, 弱者道之用.
习常 Practice / wear the constant — 常 as lasting pattern.

Chapter 53 — The great Way is very level

朝甚除,田甚芜,仓甚虚;

If I were firmly to have knowing, I would walk the great Way — and fear only going aside.

The great Way is very level, yet people love the footpaths.

The court is very well-swept; the fields are very weedy; the granaries are very empty.

Wearing patterned color, girt with a sharp sword, stuffed with drink and food, goods and wealth left over — this is called robbers’ boast. Not the Way!

LNV reading

The main road is even. People still prefer shortcuts — clever paths, official gleam, the side trail that looks like a win.

Look at the split: halls polished, land neglected, stores empty. Costume, blade, stuffed mouth, surplus goods — and they call it success. The text names it **thieves’ brag**. Not the Way.

Uncarved powering-up is the opposite of that picture: no patterned robe as proof, no extra sword as identity, no surplus extracted while the field dies. Sovereignty-aligned: a gleaming center over empty granaries is already collapse wearing makeup. Outlast that; don’t envy it.

The great Way is level; people love shortcuts — swept courts, wasted fields, full belts: thieves’ boast, not the Way.

8 term notes
Firmly / in a small clear way have knowing — modest certainty, not a credential dump.
Fear only going aside / showing off — 施 as stray or display; keep to the main Way.
Great Way very level — even road; 夷 also “elusive” in ch. 14, here “level/even.”
好径 Love bypaths — shortcuts, side tracks.
Court very cleared/swept — polished administration.
Fields very overgrown, granaries very empty — real provision gone.
Robbers’ extravagance / thieves’ boast — surplus display as theft-energy. Some texts 盗竽.
Not the Way! — flat verdict.

Chapter 54 — What is well planted is not pulled up

修之于身,其德乃真;修之于家,其德乃余;

What is well set up is not pulled out; what is well embraced does not slip — sons and grandsons thereby continue the rites without stop.

Cultivate it in the person: virtue then is true. Cultivate it in the family: virtue then has surplus. Cultivate it in the village: virtue then is long. Cultivate it in the state: virtue then is abundant. Cultivate it in all under heaven: virtue then is widespread.

So: by the person watch the person; by the family watch the family; by the village watch the village; by the state watch the state; by all under heaven watch all under heaven. How do I know the world-field is thus? By this.

LNV reading

Well-planted doesn’t need to be yanked into a new campaign every season. Well-held doesn’t slip. Continuity is the test, not a spike of credit.

Start in the person — de becomes real there — then house, village, state, world-field. The same grain scales; it doesn’t invert at the border of office. Watch each layer by its own layer, not by a distant banner.

Uncarved method as powering-up: true in the body first. A swept court over empty granaries (53) is the opposite scale — display at the center, no root in the person. How you know the field: this sequence, not a tour of every room (47).

Plant well, hold well — cultivate from person outward; know each layer by itself, and the field by that.

6 term notes
Well established is not uprooted — planted, not propped.
Well embraced does not slip — 抱 as in 抱一.
Cultivate in person / house / village / state / world-field — nested scale. 邦 is state; 天下 is the wider field. Don’t render both “kingdom.”
De then true / surplus / lasting / abundant / widespread — quality changes by scale, same practice.
By means of the person, view the person — like knows like; no fake universal dashboard.
以此 By this — same close as ch. 21: the method is the proof.

Chapter 55 — Who holds virtue in fullness is like an infant

Who holds virtue in thickness is compared to the red infant. Poison insects do not sting; fierce beasts do not seize; striking birds do not strike.

Bones weak, sinews soft, yet the grip is firm. Does not yet know the joining of female and male, yet the organ stands — essence at its utmost.

Howls all day and does not grow hoarse — harmony at its utmost.

Know harmony: call it the constant. Know the constant: call it brightness. To thicken life: call it (in)auspicious omen. The heart driving the breath: call it force.

Things at peak vigor then age — that is called not-the-Way. Not-the-Way ends early.

LNV reading

Thick de looks like the infant: soft, uncarved, and the horn/claw/stinger find no purchase (same family as 无死地 in 50). Weak frame, firm hold. Essence full without the grown game; crying all day without wrecking the throat — harmony, not strain.

Know that harmony as the constant; know the constant as clarity. “Add on more life” as a project is already an omen; the mind whipping the breath is the hard-force path — tiptoe, 强行.

Peak then age, not-the-Way, ends early (30). Uncarved powering-up is infant-thick de, not a life-extension hustle or a heart that flogs qi. Oracle tag: pu + water (soft, no purchase for the predator).

Thick virtue is the infant — soft, unstung, harmony without strain; whipping life to a peak is not-the-Way and ends early.

9 term notes
Holding de thickly — fullness of virtue as inner store, not badge.
赤子 Red infant — newborn; echo of 婴儿 in 10, 20, 28.
Stingers, beasts, birds of prey don’t take hold — no death-ground.
握固 Grip firm — soft body, sure hold.
Essence at peak / harmony at peak — completeness without grown forcing.
Same ladder as ch. 16: harmony → constant → brightness.
Adding-on to life called xiang — omen; often read as inauspicious when “life” is forced thicker
心使气曰强 Heart/mind commanding qi called “strength” — forced strength, not 自胜者强.
Same close as ch. 30.

Chapter 56 — Who knows does not speak

Who knows does not speak; who speaks does not know.

Block the openings, shut the gates; blunt the sharpness, untie the splits; soften the glare, join the dust — this is called dark sameness (xuan tong).

Therefore: you cannot get to be close to him, cannot get to be distant; cannot get to profit him, cannot get to harm him; cannot get to honor him, cannot get to cheapen him. Therefore he is valued under heaven.

LNV reading

Knowing that needs a press conference isn’t the knowing. Close the leaks, blunt the point, unknot the faction-cut, dim the spotlight, stand in ordinary dust (same four as ch. 4) — dark sameness: not a club, a refusal to be filed.

No handle for intimacy-politics, exile, bribe, hit, promotion, or disgrace. That is why the field values him — nothing to grab. Outlasting as no-purchase (50, 55), not as a personal win.

Oracle tag: wu wei + uncarved. The slogan people pin on “38” lives in 37/48; this chapter is what that looks like as a person others can’t instrument.

Who knows doesn’t speechify — blunt, untie, dim, join the dust; no handle for love, harm, honor, or cheapening.

6 term notes
The one who knows is not the talker; the talker is not the one who knows — proverb-tight; not a ban on all speech (the book still speaks).
Same pair as ch. 52 — stop the leaks.
Same quartet as ch. 4 — blunt, untie, soften glare, share dust.
Dark sameness / deep togetherness — merged in the unnamed, not a party membership.
Cannot be obtained as close/far, profit/harm, noble/base — no lever on him.
Therefore valued in the world-field — precious because uninstrumentable.

Chapter 57 — Use the straight to order the state

天下多忌讳,而民弥贫;民多利器,国家滋昏;

Use the straight to order the state; use the strange to employ arms; use being-without-affairs to take all under heaven.

How do I know it is so? By this: The more taboos under heaven, the poorer the people; the more sharp tools among the people, the darker the state and house; the more skills and tricks, the more strange goods arise; the more laws and orders shine out, the more thieves and robbers there are.

So the sage says: I do not force — and the people transform of themselves. I love stillness — and the people set themselves right. I am without (meddling) affairs — and the people enrich themselves. I am without desire — and the people uncarve themselves.

LNV reading

Straight for civic order; trick-oddness for war if war happens; no-meddling for the world-field (48). Proof is empirical in the chapter’s own list: more taboos, poorer people; more weapons-as-tools, darker house; more hustle-craft, more freak commodities; **more bright statutes, more thieves**.

Then the method-sentence people remember: I wu wei — people self-change; I stay still — they self-correct; I leave off affairs — they self-enrich; I drop desire — they return to pu.

That is the uncarved method as strategy, said in the first person. Sovereignty-aligned / agorist rhyme: stop feeding taboo, arsenal-display, clever-profit, and law-glare; the field rights, fills, and uncarves without your trophy. Victory as outlasting, for the All.

More laws, more thieves — I do not force and the people change themselves; I drop desire and they return to the uncarved.

8 term notes
By the straight/correct, order the state — 正 as even order, not a crusade.
By the odd/surprise, use arms — war as exception-craft, not civic normal.
By no-meddling, take the world-field — same as 48.
Taboos / prohibitions — banned zones of life.
利器 Sharp tools of advantage — echo of 国之利器 (36); weapons and leverage.
Tricks of skill / strange goods — hustle-craft and novelty product.
Laws-and-decrees increasingly bright, thieves increasingly many — the memorable civic couplet.
自化 / 自正 / 自富 / 自朴 Self-transform, self-correct, self-enrich, self-uncarve — four 自 of unforced return.

Chapter 58 — When government is muffled, the people are simple

When the governing is muffled-muffled, the people are simple-simple. When the governing is sharp-sharp, the people are lacking-lacking.

Calamity — that on which fortune leans. Fortune — that in which calamity crouches. Who knows the limit? There is no set “correct.”

The correct turns back into the odd; the good turns back into the uncanny. People’s bewilderment — its days have long been fixed.

Therefore the sage is square and does not cut; edged and does not slash; straight and does not unbridled; bright and does not glare.

LNV reading

Muffled rule, thick people. Audit-rule (察察, ch. 20), people full of holes. The sharp state manufactures the lacking citizen.

Bad luck leans on good; good has bad crouched in it. No one owns the last tick. Today’s “correct” becomes tomorrow’s trick; today’s “good” becomes a spook. The confusion is old.

So: square without slicing (大制不割), sharp without gouging, straight without running wild, light without glare (和其光). Uncarved method after 57: still the block, now as how you hold an edge without becoming the cutting-machine.

Muffled government, simple people; sharp government, broken people — be square without cutting, bright without glare.

7 term notes
Muffled, dull-seeming rule / thick, simple people — echo of 我独闷闷 (20).
Sharp inspection / people full of lacks — audit-state vs damaged populace.
Calamity: that which fortune leans on — the famous reversal pair.
There is no (fixed) correct — no last official setting of the pole.
Straight-correct reverts to odd; good reverts to uncanny — names flip (echo of ch. 2).
Square and not cutting — shape without the knife, echo of 28’s
Light and not dazzling — brightness without the feast-glare.

Chapter 59 — For ruling people and serving heaven, nothing beats restraint

To order people and serve heaven, nothing is like restraint (se — husbanding, sparing).

Only restraint is called early submission (early alignment). Early alignment is called heavily accumulating virtue. Heavily accumulate virtue, and there is nothing not overcome. Nothing not overcome, and no one knows the limit. No one knows the limit — then you can have the state. Having the mother of the state — then you can last long. This is called deep root, firm base: the Way of long life and lasting vision.

LNV reading

Not a new carving. Husband strength; don’t spend it on feast, statute-glare, and desire. That sparing is early alignment — de stacks because it isn’t wasted on tiptoe.

Then “nothing not overcome” is not conquest theater. It’s the same as 无不为: fewer leaks, more capacity. Limit unknown because you’re not burning the store on display.

“Have the state” here is hold the mother of the house — root, not trophy-office. Deep root, firm base, long seeing: outlasting for the All. Method-sibling of pu (decrease, don’t add) without this chapter printing 朴.

Spare and husband — de accumulates, the limit is unknown, the root goes deep; that is how something lasts.

8 term notes
啬 sè Restraint / husbanding / not wasting — agrarian thrift of force; not “stingy” as vice only.
早服 Early submit / early take-on the pattern — align before the leak is huge.
Heavily pile de — accumulate virtue by not spending it.
Nothing not overcome — capacity, not a war-slogan.
None know its limit — unspent store has no visible rim.
Have the mother of the state — source of the state, not “own the kingdom.” 国 is state.
Deep root, solid root-base — planted (54), not propped.
Long life, lasting seeing — duration of life and vision; not a later alchemy flyer unless you label that as extra tradition.

Chapter 60 — Ruling a large state is like cooking a small fish

Ordering a large state is like cooking a small fish.

When the Way is used to oversee all under heaven, the ghosts are not numinous (as a power). It is not that the ghosts are not numinous — their numinous power does not harm people. It is not that their numinous power does not harm people — the sage also does not harm people.

When the two do not harm each other, virtue gathers and returns there.

LNV reading

A large state cooked like a small fish: don’t flip it to death. Over-handling is how you ruin both dinner and realm (29, 57).

If the Way stands over the field, even the uncanny doesn’t land as harm; the sage doesn’t land as harm either. Two sides not injuring each other — de comes home of itself.

Sovereignty-aligned: less stirring, less harm. No need to carve a 朴 into this chapter. The method is the light hand, not the slogan.

Cook a large state like a small fish — under the Way, neither ghost-power nor sage harms; virtue comes home.

6 term notes
Order a large state as if cooking a small fish — don’t keep turning it; over-stir breaks it. 国 is state.
With Dao present-over the world-field — oversee, not occupy as trophy.
Its ghosts are not shen — not acting as a harming numinous force.
Does not injure people — the repeated hinge.
The two do not injure one another — uncanny and sage both refuse harm.
De intermingles and returns there — virtue comes home; not “kingdom comes.”

Chapter 61 — A large state is the lower reaches

A large state is the lower reaches — the meeting-place of all under heaven, the female of all under heaven.

The female constantly overcomes the male by stillness, and by stillness takes the below.

So: a large state, by lowering itself to a small state, takes the small state. A small state, by lowering itself to a large state, takes the large state.

Some lower themselves in order to take; some lower themselves and (thereby) are taken in.

The large state wants no more than to gather and rear people; the small state wants no more than to enter and serve people.

When both get what they want, the large one ought to be the below.

LNV reading

Power that lasts sits downhill — confluence, receptive, still — not the upstream dam that forces every stream. Female/still/below over male/forcing (10, 28, 36): water-pattern in interstate form.

Lower yourself and you “take” without a lunge. The large wants to gather and rear; the small wants a place to enter. Both can have that if the large one stays low. A large state that must stand high manufactures the resistance it then calls order.

Sovereignty-aligned: hegemony as downstream reception, not as flipped small-fish (60) or war-horses at the border (46). Classic image, different word than 朴.

The large state belongs downstream — still, female, below; when both get what they want, the large one should stay the low place.

6 term notes
下流 Lower reaches / downstream — where waters meet; not “morally base.”
Confluence of the world-field / female of the world-field — meeting-place and receptive pole.
Female constantly overcomes male by stillness — same pair as 知其雄守其雌.
以下…则取 By being below, then take — taking as gathering-in, not as loot; still easy to over-read as cunning. The chapter’s own limit: 不过欲兼畜人 / 入事人.
兼畜人 Gather and rear people — 畜 as in 德畜之 (51).
The large one ought to act as the below — the verdict.

Chapter 62 — The Way is the storehouse of the ten thousand things

The Way is the inner store (recess) of the ten thousand things. It is the treasure of the good person, and that by which the not-good person is kept.

Fine words can be sold in the market; honored conduct can put a man above others. People who are not-good — what discarding of them is there?

So: set up the Son of Heaven, place the three dukes — though there be two-hand jade first and four-horse teams, it is not as good as sitting and advancing this Way.

Why did the ancients value this Way? Did they not say: by seeking, one obtains; having guilt, one is spared? Therefore it is valued under heaven.

LNV reading

Dao as the inner hold of things — treasure for the good, and still what keeps the not-good (27, 49: no discard pile). Fine speech can be merch; fine conduct can rank a man. That market is not the store.

Don’t throw the not-good away. Enthrone whoever you like, pile jade and horses — sitting and moving this Way beats the ceremony. Old valuation: seekers find; the guilty find a way off the hook — the field still holds them.

Low inherit: the store is not the parade. Sovereignty-aligned: office and tribute are thinner than the recess that keeps even the failed. Meekness as keeping the below, not as a new title.

The Way is the inner store of things — treasure, and also what keeps the not-good; jade and four-horse teams lose to sitting this Way.

7 term notes
The recess / inner shrine-store of the ten thousand things — 奥 as inner depth, not “mystery” as fog only.
That by which the not-good are protected/kept — refuse 弃人.
Fine words can be marketed — speech as vendible.
What discarding is there? — rhetorical: don’t dump them.
Install Son of Heaven and three dukes — high ceremony; 天子 is the received title, not our mystic “kingdom” stamp.
Two-arm jade first, then four-horse team — tribute theater.
Seek and obtain; have guilt and be spared — old reason this Way was prized.

Chapter 63 — Do the not-forcing

Do the not-forcing; take affairs as no-affair; taste the tasteless.

Great/small, many/few — repay resentment with virtue.

Plan the hard in its easy; do the great in its fine. Hard affairs under heaven always arise from the easy; great affairs under heaven always arise from the fine.

Therefore the sage never does the great — so he can complete his great.

Light promises must mean scant trust; many “easy”s must mean many hards. Therefore the sage still treats it as hard — so in the end there is no hard.

LNV reading

Act by not adding force; handle business as not-stirring; taste what has no flavor (35). Size and count are not the first fact — meet resentment with de, not with a bigger grab.

Hard grows from easy; great grows from fine. Don’t start by “doing the great.” Complete greatness by never moving into the great-as-project (34).

Cheap yes, thin trust (17, 23). Call everything easy and you buy difficulty. Treat it as hard while it is still small — then the hard doesn’t arrive. Sovereignty-aligned: no lunge at the hall; start where the thing is still uncarved enough to turn.

Do not-forcing; work the hard while it’s easy and the great while it’s fine — never play “great,” and greatness completes.

6 term notes
Do wu wei; affair the no-affair; taste the no-flavor — three matching privatives.
Repay resentment with de — virtue, not matching the wound in kind.
Plan the difficult at its easy stage.
Does not do-the-great, therefore can complete the great — echo of 不自为大.
Light promises, necessarily scant xin — cheap speech thins trust.
Still treats it as difficult, therefore finally no difficulty.

Chapter 64 — What is at rest is easy to hold

What is at rest is easy to hold; what has no omen yet is easy to plan. What is brittle is easy to split; what is minute is easy to scatter.

Work it when it is not yet there; order it when it is not yet in chaos.

A tree you can put your arms around is born from a hair-tip. A nine-story terrace rises from a heap of earth. A walk of a thousand li begins under the foot.

Who works it ruins it; who holds it loses it. Therefore the sage does not force — so no ruin; does not hold — so no loss.

The people’s doing of affairs: often they ruin it when it is almost complete. Careful at the end as at the start — then no ruined affair.

Therefore the sage desires not to desire, does not prize goods hard to get; learns not to learn, returns to what the crowd passes by; and assists the so-of-itself of the ten thousand things — and does not dare to force.

LNV reading

Handle what is still quiet, still unsignaled, still brittle and small. Waiting until it is a nine-story crisis is how both states and persons flip the small fish to bits.

The journey-line is just that: start under the foot. Force ruins; grip loses (29). Almost-done is where people smash their own work — end as careful as beginning.

Desire not-desiring; don’t prize the rare; learn the un-learning; go back to what the crowd skipped. Help things be ziran; don’t dare “do” them. Sovereignty-aligned: subtract, assist, don’t seize — same method as 57 without reprinting 朴.

Work it before it exists; a thousand li starts under the foot — force ruins, grip loses; assist what is so-of-itself and do not dare to force.

8 term notes
No omen yet, easy to plan — echo of 未兆 in 20.
Do it at not-yet-there; order it at not-yet-chaos.
Hair-tip / piled earth / under the foot — three scales of beginning. The thousand-li line is received and famous; keep it, don’t upgrade it into a proverb-collection extra.
Same couplet as ch. 29.
Ruin it when nearly complete — the late smash.
Desire the not-desire — echo of 无欲.
Same rare-goods warning as 3, 12.
Assist the ziran of things and not dare to force — the close.

Chapter 65 — Those of old who were good at the Way

Those of old good at the Way did not use it to make the people bright (glare-clever); they were going to use it to make them simple (yu).

The people are hard to order because their clever-knowing is many.

So: use clever-knowing to order the state — that is the thief of the state. Do not use clever-knowing to order the state — that is the blessing of the state.

Know these two also as the measuring-pattern. Always know the measuring-pattern — this is called dark virtue.

Dark virtue is deep, is far; it returns with the things — then and only then it arrives at great going-along.

LNV reading

Not a brief for keeping people stupid so a court can feed. “Brighten the people” here is the 察察 / 智慧 glare of 18–20: clever-policy that multiplies handles. 愚 is cousin to muffled, infant, uncarved — not a slur you throw at subjects to own them.

A state run as an IQ-and-scheme contest steals from the state. A state not run that way is its luck. Hold both as the pattern; that holding is 玄德 — deep, far, turning back with things, then great accordance.

Sovereignty-aligned: clever governance is the thief; subtract the scheme-layer. No 朴 stamped in. No gospel line pasted on.

Don’t glare-clever the people into being ungovernable — clever rule is the thief of the state; dark virtue turns back with things into great accordance.

8 term notes
Not in order to ming the people — ming here is glare-clever making, not inner 明 of 16/33.
Were going to yu them — simple/plain/dull-seeming; the book’s own 我愚人之心 (20). Easy for English to slander as “stupefy.” Don’t.
Because their zhi is many — clever-knowing piled up.
Governing the state by cleverness is the state’s thief — 国 is state.
Measuring-pattern / standard to check against.
Dark virtue — same phrase as 10, 51.
With things, it returns/reverses — 反 as the Way’s motion (40).
Great going-along / great accordance — ziran at scale.

Chapter 66 — Rivers and seas are kings of the hundred valleys

The reason rivers and seas can be kings of the hundred valleys: they are good at being below them — therefore they can be kings of the hundred valleys.

So the sage, wishing to be above the people, must with words be below them; wishing to be ahead of the people, must with his person be behind them.

So the sage sits above and the people are not burdened; sits in front and the people are not harmed. Therefore all under heaven are glad to push him forward and do not weary of him.

Because he does not contend, no one under heaven can contend with him.

LNV reading

Water-kingship is downhill (8, 32, 61). Want the high place, speak from the low; want the front, put the body behind (7). Then above is not a weight and ahead is not an injury. People still push that one forward — no fatigue of the cult.

Non-contention again: the fight can’t find a peer (22). Sovereignty-aligned: lead as valley, not as extra load.

Seas rule the valleys by lying below — sit above without being a burden; don’t contend, and no one can contend with you.

6 term notes
King of the hundred valleys — water as confluence; 王 is king/ruler of streams, not a mystic kingdom-title.
Good at being below them — the mechanism.
Wish to be above the people: in speech be below them.
Lives above and the people do not feel the weight.
Glad to push him up and not weary — consent without exhaustion.
Same close as ch. 22.

Chapter 67 — I have three treasures

All under heaven say my Way is great — as if it does not resemble (anything). Only because it is great does it seem not to resemble. If it resembled, it would have long since been small!

I have three treasures; I hold them and keep them. One is called compassion (ci). Two is called restraint (jian). Three is called not daring to be first under heaven.

Compassion, therefore able to be brave. Restraint, therefore able to be wide. Not daring to be first under heaven, therefore able to complete the head of vessels.

Now: discard compassion and still be brave; discard restraint and still be wide; discard the behind and still be first — death!

Compassion: used in battle, then victory; used in defense, then firm. Heaven about to save someone uses compassion to guard them.

LNV reading

Greatness that looked like a familiar product would already be small (41’s laugh). The three held things: mercy-bond, husbanding, refusal to cut to the front of the field.

Bravery that isn’t rooted in ci, amplitude that isn’t rooted in jian, first-place that isn’t rooted in staying behind — the chapter calls that death. Not metaphor-shopping: the peak without the root ends early (30, 55).

Sovereignty-aligned: keep the three; don’t run the stripped versions (toughness, expansion, priority) as if they were the treasures.

Three treasures: compassion, restraint, not daring to be first — strip those and still play brave, wide, and first: death.

8 term notes
Seems not to resemble — doesn’t look like the expected thing; 肖 as likeness to a type.
If it matched the type, it would long ago have been petty.
慈 cí Compassion / parental kindness — warmth of bond, not a church brand. First treasure.
俭 jiǎn Restraint / frugality — husbanding, close to 啬 (59). Second treasure.
Not daring to act as first in the world-field — third treasure; behind, not the lunge.
Become chief of vessels — complete as elder of tools/offices (28’s 器), not “become a gadget.”
Dead! — verdict on the stripped triad.
Guard them by means of ci — heaven’s save is compassion-guard, not extra force.

Chapter 68 — A good commander is not martial

Who is good at being an officer is not warlike. Who is good at battle is not angry. Who is good at overcoming an enemy does not engage (as peer). Who is good at using people places himself below them.

This is called the virtue of not contending; this is called the power of using people; this is called matching heaven — the ancient utmost.

LNV reading

Skill without the war-theater: no swagger, no rage-fuel, no locking as equal into the fight, no standing over the people you work with. Below, again (66).

Name it: de of 不争; strength that works through others rather than through glare; alignment with heaven’s old limit. Sovereignty-aligned: command without martial identity — the opposite of 盗夸 (53).

Good officer, not warlike; good victor, not locked in the clash — virtue of not contending, below the people, matching heaven’s old utmost.

7 term notes
Good as shi (officer/knight), not wu (martial-display). 士 here is military officer more than “scholar.”
Not angry — battle without rage as engine.
不与 Does not give-battle-as-peer / does not entangle — win without matching the enemy’s game.
Acts as their below — same downhill as 66.
The de of non-contention — named outright.
The force of employing people — others’ strength, not your glare.
Matches heaven, the ancient utmost — pairing with tian as limit/pattern.

Chapter 69 — The strategists have a saying

Those who use arms have a saying: I do not dare be host; I am guest. I do not dare advance an inch; I retreat a foot.

This is called moving without a formation; rolling the sleeve without an arm; confronting without an enemy; holding without a weapon.

No calamity is greater than taking the enemy lightly. Taking the enemy lightly nearly loses my treasures.

So when raised armies meet, the one who grieves wins.

LNV reading

Even the arms-saying refuses first-move: guest not host, foot back not inch forward (67’s third treasure). Action that doesn’t offer a formation, an arm, a peer-enemy, a blade to grab — no death-ground (50).

Contempt for the other is the disaster; it almost spends the three treasures. When two hosts collide, the one who can still mourn wins — not the one who beautifies killing (31).

Sovereignty-aligned: last resort stays last; grief not parade. Related later:

Dare not be host; retreat a foot — no calamity like taking the enemy lightly; when armies meet, the one who grieves wins.

6 term notes
Be host / be guest — don’t open the war; respond if at all.
Advance an inch / retreat a foot — refuse the lunge.
March no-march; bare no-arm; throw no-enemy; hold no-weapon — four privatives of not offering a target.
Taking the opponent lightly — contempt as the named disaster.
几丧吾宝 Nearly lose my treasures — 宝 as in 67’s three.
The grieving one wins — funeral-mind (31), not blood-joy.

Chapter 70 — My words are very easy to know

My words are very easy to know, very easy to do. Under heaven no one can know them, no one can do them.

Words have an ancestor; affairs have a lord. Only because of not-knowing, therefore they do not know me.

Those who know me are few; those who follow me are precious. Therefore the sage wears coarse cloth and holds jade in the breast.

LNV reading

Easy to know, easy to walk — and the field still can’t. Not because the sentences are ornate. Words have a source; affairs have a master-thread. Miss that, and you miss the speaker.

Rare knowing, precious following — not a fan count. Coarse cloth outside, jade in the chest: value not worn as 盗夸. Sovereignty-aligned: the thing is plain; the feast can’t practice plainness.

Easy to know and do — yet unused; few know, the follower is precious — coarse cloth, jade at the breast.

5 term notes
Very easy to know, very easy to practice — the paradox of unused ease.
Speech has an ancestor/source; affairs have a lord/principle — a root, not isolated slogans.
Do not know me — ignorance of the source, not a personality complaint only.
Knowers few; those who take me as pattern are prized — 则 as model-after.
Wear coarse wool-hemp, jade held at the breast — outer poor, inner treasure; opposite of 服文采 (53).

Chapter 71 — To know that you do not know is the highest

To know not-knowing is highest. To not-know (and yet) know — that is sickness.

Only because he treats sickness as sickness, therefore he is not sick. The sage is not sick; because he treats sickness as sickness, therefore he is not sick.

LNV reading

Highest is knowing the not-known (14, 15, 20). Sickness is wearing a know-face over a not-know. Call the sickness a sickness and it doesn’t run you.

Sovereignty-aligned: refuse expert-theater that cannot admit 不知. No extra slogan.

Knowing not-knowing is high; pretending to know is the sickness — name it as sickness and you are not ruled by it.

4 term notes
Know (that one does) not-know: highest — Socratic-adjacent in English ears; keep it as the Chinese pair.
Not-knowing (yet claiming/acting as) knowing: sickness — the false know.
病病 Sicken the sickness / treat the sickness as sickness — recognize it and it loses rule.
Therefore not sick — repeated close.

Chapter 72 — When the people do not fear the majestic

When the people do not fear awe-power, then the great awe arrives.

Do not cramp where they dwell; do not press-down what they live on.

Only because he does not press-down, therefore they do not press-down (weary of him).

Therefore the sage knows himself and does not display himself; loves himself and does not exalt himself. So discard that and take this.

LNV reading

When ordinary awe is used up, a larger one arrives — collapse-awe, not a successful scare-program. Don’t squeeze dwellings; don’t grind down livelihood. Not pressing is why they don’t turn and press back.

Self-know without self-display; self-regard without self-exalt (22, 24). Drop the glare, keep the real. Sovereignty-aligned: squeezed life manufactures the very fear-event the court thought it was postponing.

When people no longer fear the usual awe, the great awe comes — don’t cramp their living; know yourself, don’t exalt yourself.

6 term notes
People don’t fear wei (awe/majesty/threat), then great wei arrives — reading splits between “then a greater terror comes” and “then true majesty arrives.” Received line supports the first as warning; don’t flatten it into only one sermon.
Do not treat their dwellings as cheap / do not crowd them out.
Do not oppress/weary what they live by — livelihood.
Only no-press, therefore no-press (in return) — same logic as 不争.
Know self, don’t display; love self, don’t treat as rank-precious.
Same close as 12, 38.

Chapter 73 — Brave in daring, then kill

Brave in daring: then killing. Brave in not-daring: then living.

These two: one benefits, one harms. What heaven hates — who knows the reason?

Therefore the sage still treats it as hard.

The Way of heaven: does not contend, yet is good at winning; does not speak, yet is good at answering; does not summon, yet (things) come of themselves; is slack and slow, yet is good at planning.

Heaven’s net is vast, vast — coarse-meshed, and does not miss.

LNV reading

Two braveries: the lunge that kills, the not-dare that lives (67, 69). Which pays and which costs is not always obvious; heaven’s dislike isn’t a memo. So the sage still treats it as hard (63).

Heaven’s Way: win without fight, answer without speech, arrival without summons, plan without tightness. The net is wide and loose — and nothing wanted is lost. Accurate first: that’s the pattern named, not a brief to write more law so the mesh looks tighter.

Brave-to-dare kills; brave-not-to-dare lives — heaven wins without contending; the net is wide, loose, and does not miss.

8 term notes
Courage toward daring / courage toward not-daring — two directions of brave.
Then kill / then live — outcome-pair.
What heaven hates, who knows why — refuse fake certainty (71).
Not contend, yet good at winning — 不争 again.
Not speak, yet good at response — echo of 不言之教.
Not summoned, come of themselves — 自.
Relaxed / unhurried — slack tempo, still good at plan.
Heaven’s net vast; sparse and not missing — famous close; 疏 is wide mesh, not “strict.”

Chapter 74 — If the people do not fear death

If the people do not fear death, how can you use death to frighten them?

If you made the people constantly fear death, and there were those who acted oddly — I could seize and kill them, and who would dare?

There is constantly one whose office is to kill, who kills. To kill in place of the one whose office is to kill — this is called hewing in place of the great carpenter.

Those who hew in place of the great carpenter — few do not wound their own hands.

LNV reading

When death has lost its leverage, threat-of-death is empty theater. The hypothetical “if they feared, we could execute the odd and none would dare” is the chapter setting a trap, not handing you a manual.

Killing has an office already. Take that tool as amateur carpenter and you cut your own hand. Sovereignty-aligned: extra execution as policy is substituting yourself for a pattern you don’t hold — self-injury, not order.

If people don’t fear death, death-threats are useless — hew in the great carpenter’s place and you wound your own hand.

6 term notes
People do not fear death — leverage of capital threat is gone.
How then frighten them with death?
Those who act odd / deviant — 奇 as in 57’s strange, not a full legal code.
The one whose charge is killing — official/regular slayer; often read as heaven or the proper office, not every minister.
Hew in place of the master carpenter — usurp the cutting role.
Rare is the one who does not injure his hand — the cost lands on the substitute.

Chapter 75 — The people starve

The people starve: because those above eat so much of the tax — therefore starve. The people are hard to order: because those above have (too much) doing — therefore hard to order. The people take death lightly: because those above seek life so thickly — therefore take death lightly.

Only the one who does not act for the sake of life — this one is better than those who prize life.

LNV reading

Hunger, unruliness, cheap death — the chapter points up, not at a cursed populace. Too much tax-eating; too much 有为 from above; too thick a “life” project at the top (50’s 生生之厚). People then starve, resist, and stop fearing the death-threat (74).

Who doesn’t make a career of thickening life is better at honoring life than the prizers. Accurate first: cause is named in the court, not in a mystery of the crowd.

Starve from the tax-eating above; hard to govern from the above’s doing; death comes cheap where the top lives too thick.

6 term notes
Those above eat tax in plenty — extraction as hunger’s cause.
Those above have wei — meddling doing; opposite of 无为.
求生之厚 Seek living-thickness — same 厚 as 生生之厚 (50).
Take death lightly — pairs with 民不畏死 (74).
One who does not take “life” as his doing — not anti-life; anti the life-project that costs everyone else.
Better than valuing-life as prize — the thick prizers lose the thing they advertise.

Chapter 76 — People in life are soft and weak

A person’s living is soft and weak; his dying is hard and stiff. Grass and trees in living are soft and brittle; in dying they are dry and withered.

Therefore the hard-and-strong are companions of death; the soft-and-weak are companions of life.

So: weapons made strong then perish; wood made strong then snaps.

The hard-great sit below; the soft-weak sit above.

LNV reading

Live soft; die stiff. Green is tender; dead is dry. Hardness is death’s party; softness is life’s. Armies pumped strong go under; timber pumped strong breaks.

Then the placement: what looks great-and-hard belongs down; soft-weak belongs up — water over rock again, not a pep talk to go limp as policy theater.

Alive: soft. Dead: stiff. Strong weapons perish, strong wood snaps — hard-great below, soft-weak above.

5 term notes
Soft-weak / hard-stiff — life/death pair, same grain as 36, 43, 55.
Companions of death / companions of life — echo of 50’s 徒.
兵强则灭 Weapons strong, then extinguished — variants include 不胜; sense is strong-arms fail.
Wood strong, then snaps — some witnesses 兵; received 折/共 vary; snap is the usual sense.
Hard-great occupy the below; soft-weak occupy the above — placement verdict.

Chapter 77 — The Way of heaven is like drawing a bow

The Way of heaven — is it not like drawing a bow? What is high it presses down; what is low it lifts. What has extra it reduces; what is insufficient it fills.

The Way of heaven: reduce the extra and fill the insufficient. The way of humans is not so: reduce the insufficient to serve the extra.

Who can take extra and serve all under heaven? Only the one who has the Way.

Therefore the sage acts and does not rely; work completed, does not dwell — he does not wish to display worthiness.

LNV reading

Heaven’s pull is a bow: drop the high, raise the low, shave surplus, patch lack. Human custom runs the other way — shave the lacking to feed the already-extra (53’s swept court, empty barn).

Who can spend surplus on the field? Only the one with the Way. Act, don’t lean on it; finish, don’t live in the credit; don’t show “worthy.” Accurate first: the inversion is named as 人之道 versus 天之道.

Heaven’s Way draws the bow: lower the high, fill the lack — human way strips the lack to serve the extra.

6 term notes
Drawing a bow — high string pressed, low raised; the image of rebalance.
Reduce extra, supplement lack — heaven’s direction.
Reduce the insufficient to offer up to the extra — human inversion.
Take surplus and serve the world-field — the rare capacity.
Act without relying; work done, don’t dwell — echo of 2, 9, 10, 34.
Does not wish to appear worthy — refuse 尚贤 theater (3).

Chapter 78 — Nothing under heaven is softer than water

Under heaven nothing is softer and weaker than water, yet for attacking the hard and stiff, nothing can beat it — for there is nothing that can replace it.

Weak overcoming strong, soft overcoming hard: no one under heaven does not know it; no one can practice it.

Therefore the sage says: Who receives the filth of the state is called lord of the grain-and-soil shrine. Who receives the state’s inauspiciousness is king of all under heaven.

Straight words seem reversed.

LNV reading

Water again: softest, unbeatable against the stiff, no substitute. Everyone knows the couplet; almost no one walks it (70). Taking the state’s dirt and ill-luck — the low place — is how one is actually lord. Straight talk sounds backwards (41). No extra 道-tag unless you count the whole book; the load here is water and the reversed word.

Nothing softer than water, and nothing better at wearing the hard — everyone knows; few can do; straight words sound upside down.

7 term notes
Nothing more soft-weak than water — peak water chapter with 8, 43, 76.
Nothing by which to exchange it — no replacement for water’s way of attack.
None don’t know; none can practice — echo of 70.
Receive the state’s filth/disgrace — take the low muck, 国 is state.
Lord of soil-and-grain altar — the state’s ritual center.
Receive the state’s ill-omen, become king of the world-field — 王 kept as king; 天下 as field.
Straight words as if reversed — the chapter’s own label for its paradox.

Chapter 79 — After a great resentment is soothed

When a great resentment is harmonized, there is sure to be leftover resentment. How can this be taken as good?

Therefore the sage holds the left tally and does not exact from people.

Who has virtue oversees the tally; who has no virtue oversees the taking-cut (the tax-share).

The Way of heaven has no kin-favor; it is constantly with the good person.

LNV reading

Paper over a great grudge and a remainder stays. Calling that “settled” isn’t good. Hold your half of the contract; don’t work the other person as a debt-machine.

De keeps the tally (what was actually agreed). No-de keeps the extraction. Heaven’s Way isn’t a family patronage list; it stays with the good — not as a church slogan, as the chapter’s close.

Credit-seeking and leftover resentment are the same habit: occupying what should have been released.

Calm a great grudge and remainder remains — hold the tally, don’t exact; heaven’s Way has no favorites and stays with the good.

6 term notes
Harmonize a great resentment, leftover resentment is certain.
How can that be counted good?
Hold the left tally-stick — creditor’s or keeper’s half in old contract practice; here: keep your side, don’t squeeze.
Does not exact / blame-collect from people.
Oversee the tally vs oversee the taking (彻 as share/tax-cut) — keep account vs extract.
Heaven-Way has no inner-circle kin; constantly with the good person. Tag way here: 天道 is doing work.

Chapter 80 — A small state, few people

A small state, few people. Let there be tools of tens and hundreds and not use them. Let the people take death seriously and not move far.

Though there are boats and carriages, no place to ride them. Though there are armor and weapons, no place to array them.

Let the people return to knotting ropes and use that.

Sweeten their food, beautify their clothes, make peaceful their dwellings, make joyful their customs.

Neighboring states look on one another; cocks and dogs are heard across. The people reach old age and death and do not go back and forth.

LNV reading

Small, few — not an empire-project. Capacity exists (tools, boats, arms) and sits unused because there is no errand that needs them. Death is heavy again (not cheap as in 74–75); no far exile-migration.

Knotted rope is subtractive record, not a cosplay command. Food, cloth, dwelling, custom — enough and fitting. Neighbors visible, animals audible, lives complete without traffic of restlessness.

Picture of a field that doesn’t need the tour (47) or the war-horse (46). Sovereignty-aligned only as far as the image goes: less reach, less unused-force sitting in the open.

Small state, few people — tools idle, arms unarrayed; sweet food, quiet custom; grow old next door and don’t roam.

7 term notes
小国寡民 Small state, few people — 国 is state; remembered picture-chapter.
Tools of ten- and hundred-fold and not used — capacity without compulsion to deploy.
Take death as heavy and not migrate far.
Armor and weapons: no place to deploy them — echo of 31, 46.
Return to knotting rope and using it — simpler record; don’t inflate into “they had no writing” as a whole history.
Make food sweet, clothes fine, dwellings at rest, customs a joy — enough as quality, not surplus-boast.
Old-and-die without going back and forth — no restless traffic; not a ban on all human contact as doctrine.

Chapter 81 — Trustworthy words are not beautiful

Trustworthy words are not beautiful; beautiful words are not trustworthy. The good do not debate-wrangle; who debate-wrangle are not good. Who know are not broadly packed; who are broadly packed do not know.

The sage does not pile up. Having worked for others, he himself has more. Having given to others, he himself has still more.

The Way of heaven: benefits and does not harm. The Way of the sage: acts and does not contend.

LNV reading

True speech isn’t dressed; dressed speech isn’t true. Goodness doesn’t live in the wrangle; the wrangle isn’t goodness. Knowing isn’t a packed inventory; the packed inventory isn’t knowing (71, 81’s own 博).

No store as identity. Work for others and you have more; give and you have more — opposite of 损不足以奉有余 (77).

Heaven’s Way: benefit, not harm. The sage’s Way: act, not contend. Book ends on that pair. 道 is load-bearing here — tag way.

True words aren’t pretty; the sage doesn’t pile up — give and have more; heaven benefits and does not harm; the sage acts and does not contend.

7 term notes
Xin-speech not beautiful; beautiful speech not xin — trust vs cosmetics.
The good one is not the wrangler; the wrangler is not the good one. 辩 as disputation, not all speech.
Who knows is not the widely-stuffed; the widely-stuffed does not know.
The sage does not accumulate — no hoard-self.
Already do for others, self all-the-more has.
Heaven’s Way: benefit and not injure — 天道 doing work.
Sage’s Way: act and not contend — last word of the book.
