Gospel of Thomas
Description:
The Gospel of Thomas describes the light within as the fundamental divine essence or spark inherent in every person, which is meant to illuminate the entire world when realized. Scholars such as Elaine Pagels note that this is a significant departure from canonical texts like the Gospel of John, which present Jesus as the exclusive bearer of the divine light; instead, the Gospel of Thomas emphasizes that this light is born within the individual.

According to the text, humanity’s true origin is this divine light**. In Saying 50, Jesus instructs his followers on how to answer questions about where they came from;We have come from the light, from the place where the light came into being by itself. This inner light acts as a hidden, spiritual reality that exists deep within a person's visible image.

The Gospel of Thomas outlines several key characteristics of this inner light:
It is meant to illuminate the world: Saying 24 declares; There is light within a person of light, and it shines on the whole world. The text warns that if a person fails to manifest this inner light, the result is darkness.
It requires spiritual unity: The text closely associates the presence of light with a state of inner wholeness and harmony. Saying 61 states, one is whole, one will be filled with light, but if one is divided, one will be filled with darkness. Therefore, achieving spiritual illumination requires an individual to overcome internal division and duality.
It is identical to the universal divine presence: The light within the individual is of the exact same substance as the divine light embodied by Jesus. In Saying 77, Jesus proclaims, "I am the light that is over all things," asserting that this universal light permeates all of physical reality, teaching that you can "Split a piece of wood" or "Lift up the stone" to find it there [9, 10].

Ultimately, **the light within represents an individuals unbroken, profound connection to the divine source**, which is not found by looking outward, but rather by looking inward to discover the sacred spark that has been there all along.
